Carbon fiber time?

drove & liked this 951, but it needs about $3000 in body & paint work. would this be a good candidate for carbon fiber replacement parts? how much would those parts run? good vendors?

you can see a little more of this 951 here

Did you already sell the 911? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't carbon fiber heavier? I was under the impression that the good thing about it was how strong it is and that fiber glass was the light stuff. Anyway, it looks nice. I too shall be in the market for a 951 in the coming months.

Thumbs down

If that was the same car I saw for $7500 I'd pass big time. For that money the car should be in excellent condition IMHO. I bought mine that needs similar bodywork (or even less) for uner 4k. BTW I don't think the "carbon fiber" that these Porsche tuners sell is truely "carbon fiber". From what i heard the parts are actually fiberglass coated with carbon fiber (for the "cool" look - but I could be wrong. I would think that it would be tremendously expensive to go with real carbon fiber parts.

when you bust a carbon fibre part... watch out! those shards are SHARP!

carbon fibrre body parts are not happy when knocked into. go with fibreglass unless there's a $20,000 cheque on the line.

Carbon fiber is a wonderful material, light, strong... and EXPENSIVE. I'd go fiberglass. If you order some panels from GT Racing, post some reviews once you've got them on. I've been thinking about some wieght reduction / body improvements myself. I've seen a 951 with GT Racing panels (fenders, doors, etc.). I liked the wide-body look it gave the car, but the panels did look rather cobbled together on this car. Of course, it was a race-only car, so not much attention was probably paid to cosmetics. Anyone have the GT Racing catalog or has anyone used any other their panels?

carbon fiber is stronger and lighter than fiberglass. also more $$. gt racing has good stuff.hank can be a little hard to deal with at times though. their mail catalog is the same as what you see on their website.

Ya know, after all of your rant about the school shooting and violence, you still try to make jokes about stuff. your comment in this case, could be looked at as a threat of violence...

Yeah man, I took part in the January Bay Area event...Bill Underwood was signed up too so I was pretty excited, along with a few other 944s and 951s, but I was the only one who made a showing to represent the 4 cylinder crowd [bummer]. Anyway, yeah lemme know when you wanna go for a run cuz I'd love to check out the 951. Good luck with the fixin'! -Trevor

Yup, the event last may claimed an unsuspecting dude's modified new Beetle [go figure]. His car was totalled; now he's sporting a Boxster. On the january drive, the club founder spun her 914 and did some minor damage to that. But yeah, the drives definitely AREN'T for the faint of heart...they get pretty agressive. -Trevor

rollins, nope, not yet. soon i hope.

carter, thanks for your referral to gt-racing. i ordered through hank the fiberglass 944 turbo bumper (only 2 lbs. different than the carbon fiber) and the fiberglass nose w/intercooler opening. i'll let you know how they end up fitting.

was also thinking of the fiberglass hood (60-odd lbs. lighter than stock), as the stock hood needs painting anyhow.

you know how some guys are big on huntley, some on powerhaus, etc.? well, i can tell you i'm going to be a lindsey racing guy. i spoke with mike lindsey yesterday, and was impressed with his level-headedness and common sense. carter, did you know that lindsey sell gt-racing parts? mike said he discounts 10%.

http://www.lindseyracing.com/

anyone else have lindsey equipment in their 951?
