Hello all!
I'm new to 944's and having just bought one I have a few questions for those Porsche gods out there in readerland. 1. My car came from Florida thus the washer hoses are brittle and broken. Anyone know of a source for replacement? Looked at Pelican but could not locate. 2. Front right wheel area producing a low pitched rythmic noise that increases and decreases in relation to speed. My car has 86K, could this possibly be the wheel bearing? I have new tires (all the same - Eagle GTs) so hopefully that isn't the problem. Suggestions? 3. I've read that the factory came out with a notice to remove the intake snorkle from the airbox to the wheel well. Is this true? I have a K&N replacement filter in the airbox, was also wondering if anyone recommends modifying the airbox or going to a cone filter. 4. I have ordered a throttle response cam to replace the factory piece. Has anyone had any experience with this, neg or pos? Thanks for addressing my silly questions!

Jack the car up and spin the wheel, and see if you can pinpoint the problem.... Even if it is the wheel bearings, they are pretty cheap(about $20 for the inner/outer and seal)...... I just ordered 2 sets to do both of my front wheels.
It could be as simple as a brake dragging, if the car hasn't been driven in a while. My front brakes kinda dragged, squeaked when I first got mine, but that went away after some driving.

I am using it as a daily driver now, so maybe the fact that it wasn't driven much before I got it is a factor. I will jack it up and check for the brakes.
THanks

1) if pelican doesn't carry the replacement hoses, I'd check Performance Products... they might not have them on their website, but if you got a print catalog, I can guarantee they'd be in there.
2) Could be the bearing, the race, or the rotor. If it is the rotor, you can take the wheel off and spin the rotor to see if it is warped. 3) The inhalation of water COULD happen if you splash down into a big enough puddle, but I still have my stock "snorkel" on the car... don't know of anyone that has had problems, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. 4) The throttle response cam, although all it does is lower the amount of imput needed to raise revs is a noticable improvement over the stock cam. Although the car isn't REALLY quicker, it does give the impression of making the car feel quicker.

Followup question.....
I noticed that when looking at the engine from the front, there is a plastic tube that appears to be designed for a hose to go on, but there is no hose attached to it. It is not plugged either. I found the hole on the from of the engine where you check TDC open and the plug missing to that too. I made a plug for that, but an concerned by the mystery fitting with no hose.... To be more exact is it located below the rotor, and is made of a white/yellow plactic material and the missing hose should lead right from this fitting toward the center, front of the engine. Any ideas?

Oh so many questions.
Welcome to 944 ownership and hobby repair car. The TDC hole never did have a plug. The round inspection hole in the bell housing had a plug but most of ours have fallen out many miles ago. If you put one in it will fall out too. As to hoses and stuff on the engine look at the technical pictures and the owners cars gallery and any 944 engine picture you can. As to wheel noise. I've seen a loose center cap just bother the heck out of owners. When was the timing belt replaced?

Thanks for the insight.......yeah, lots of questions....
The paperwork shows that the timing belt was replaced in 1996 but there is no Porsche stamp when the entry was made in the service log book so that makes me suspicious.

Time isn't very kind to the rubber timing belt either.... Even if it only has 200 miles on that belt, it's probably due for a change.
I wonder if NIN ever sampled a 944 bending it's valves for some of his music........

No Porsche stamp...yeah, sure.
Once you get it in the behind at a dealer you really will not give a flying farkel if your little book has a stamp or not as long as the repair was done properly. Replace the timing belt NOW! these are good for about three maybe four years with low milage or about 15,000 to 20,000 average miles. It's around $1,500 when one breaks if you have a shop do the whole thing. Maybe one of these times I'll relate the fun we had checking the top end speed of the 924 I bought new in 1978. "We" would have been the Perris, California PD.

I mentioned the lack of stamp primarily because all the other service up to that point was stamped.
I'd like to hear your story, sounds interesting!

1. the dealers can get almost anything though it wil be pricey. have you checked the local auto stores for similar tubes that could substitute (unlikely but worth a shot)
i have an 84 and i cant think of what hose in front of the engine you could be talking about. ill go look tomorrow if no one answers before then. belts at my local porsche dealer were around $1000 to replace. (they also had to replace some seals) but thats really something i dont mind paying for peace of mind thats an awesome aristotle quote by the way

A farkel is a small yellow fuzzy creature that lives exclusively in the ballast tanks of large sea going oil tankers. They are quite useful as can survive in antifreeze and they eat harmful chemical deposits, thus making them the "must have" vehicle accessory. Unfortunately, they are VERY hard to locate on the "Farkel Market" and tend to be quite expensive. Regardless of that fact, it would be unthinkable to not have one living in your radiator. You DO have one don't you......(said while looking down at you over little round glasses and a pointed nose, with one eyebrow raised) They are quite cute although their rude habit of squirting a fowl brown fluid when they are picked up greatly reduces their desireability as pets.
Hope this helps!

Independent shop is between $300 and $400 dollars.
If you can get here early Saturday and have the two belts in had we can do it in about four hours. Excluding potty breaks. That will leave at least 5 to 8 hours to warm up the BBQ and open a few bottles of wine.

Belt and Roller Kit = $130
Needs 3 special tools = $75 (9xauto take your chances) - $625 (Porsche) That plastic hose thingy means you have a turbo water pump which is the factory recommended upgrade. Welcome.

I changed my throttle cam yesterday and I must say it is a great upgrade. Much crisper throttle response.

Well it may sound odd (thats normal on this BB) But have you tryied an aquarium the washer hose is the same as air line for the fish tanks, and only cost $1.50 a meter it the cheapest thing you will ever fix on a Porsche.
And welcome aboard may the bank be with you.
