which 944 to buy?

I have always wanted a 944. If I start to look for one what can be had for around $5000. I do have a 911 that I am in the process of rebuilding, but I would want some thing for everday transportation. I do not mind putting some work into the car.

If you shop around for a while you can find a lower mileage 944 or a slightly higher mileage turbo. Maintenance is the key. I just found an 86 Turbo with 72K for 7K.

5k? A clean 85.5 or later NA. If you shop around, you can keep some change in your pocket for any fixes down the road.

or, if you're into something lighter and quicker , $5000 will buy you a really nice early 944

When the timing belt was last replaced. If not changed in the last 30K miles/5 years or so, then it should be changed asap. Also look for whether or not the clutch has been replaced. Its a fairly pricey job. I'm sure some of the other guys here can chime in with more tips.
