high rpm??

with my standard dme, i always noticed that my 944, would accellerate fine, up to about 4500rpm, then it always seemed to struggle to get to even 5500, far less 6000. you know, hit 3000rpm, and nice kick in the pants, but it seems that it does not want to "hit " the redline at all. i recently took posession of a modified dme {thanks mr FR.W}and the low end power is up quite a bit, and i notice better accelleration, but the same situation exists, towards the higher rpm range.
i'm leaning towards maybe a new fuel pump, as i feel the engine is starving for fuel, at the upper end. maybe the fuel filter needs changing too.
i could certainly change the plugs/distributer/rotor.
i feel its fuel related, though.
anybody have any idea's ??
with my modified dme, and the nice increase i have from the bottom end/better accelleration, it would be nice to get the engine to at least rev to 6000rpm, to get maximun performance.
any advice gratefully accepted! {but not sell it}
bob.

Try the fuel filter first if it's been a while since the last change. The dampener and fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail might not be connected properly to their vacuum lines. Or the lines have leaks. Or may not be connected to the correct orfice on the throttle body.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I agree. SoCal's suggestions should definitely get you back up there. I've had to do similar things myself. One other thing though. It does seem to be a bit low, but perhaps the power curve begins to slack off a little after 4500. I've never owned a '44 NA so I'm not sure but there are many cars that I have driven which lose power quickly once you pass the top of the power curve.

yea fuel filter's cheap.
it seems like it would be more on the injector side if its not all that pronounced and only at higher revs
