air conditioning

I need to replace the air conditioning switch for my 86 944. Getting the old one out was not easy, but I chalked that up to being in the car for 15 years. The parts stores sell these switches (two different model numbers - I am not sure which one I need), but the info from one seller says:

15 PR 944 *****************85/2-89
- Only for Control Assembly **
with Replaceable Switches **

Do some have replacable switches and others do not? This doesn't seem like something that would vary between cars in the same model year.
