Question Wheel question - maby a tough one, tried search... 911 wheels on '85.5

He everyone,

Well I just COMPLETELY re-finished my '85.5 (posted pic's in another thread). A friend of mine with a '87 911 cab and a '95 993 cab was pretty impressed with all the work I did and made me an offer on his wheels...

He is going to sell his '87 Cab which he bought 993 five spoke wheels for. He said that, after all the work I did on the 944, he wants to give me the 5-spoke wheels off the 911 for the 944 (as long as I don't go out and sell the car right away).

The wheels are 17's I believe, and fit his '87 Cab correctly. can anyone tell me if they will fit my '85.5???

thanks,

I just went on tirerack.com, and searched for wheels for a '86 (don't know if '85 on the site is early or late, but I'm sure late '85 is same as '86) 944 and a '87 911 cab and it comes up with the same 4 wheels, same sizes.

Is this indication that the wheels will fit??

Thanks,

yes they should. same offset for 944's up to 86 and 911 carrera's up to '89. however, if they are factory cup wheels off the 993's then you will need his spacers as they have the later offset.

I just looked up "cup wheels" on google and found a pic - I think they are cup wheels. So he must have purchased spacers if they fit correctly on his car, and he will not need the spacers when he puts on his original wheels.

I'll be sure to get the spacers...

Thanks for the tip and help

So, what wheels are you removing for these new ones?

My wife really wants me to put some cookie cutters or Fuchs back onto my 944.

Jack, where are you located? If I EVER find some 16" Fuchs or Phne dials I will be looking to sell my Cookies. I'm in Cali so shipping cost have killed a few deals... that and I need the early offset.

Scott drooled over my wheels when he saw them. I've found out they are after market and have the correct offsets for the early 944's -- No spacers!

Look at the pictures I've put on this board in the owner picture area.

Yes they are W I D E and they do NOT rub.

I'm in Kansas. But shipping really shouldn't be that stiff, on the wheels alone that is.. I shipped a pair of seats to Florida via FedEx for only $40 for the pair(FedEx ground, and they got there in 3 days!). I'd bet you can ship 4 wheels for that or less if shipped 2 per box. The seats I shipped weighed in at close to 40lbs ea. and I fit them into a pair of 25" TV boxes...

I just can't get over some of the Ebay shipping prices for wheels though.... Some of those people really gouge you, or maybe they've never visited a FedEx terminal before......

Hugh, you talking about the 7 spokes? Those look pretty nice on there.

I don't know the width of the rims currently on my car..... They don't have a stamp on them for the size. But there are 1" adapter/spacers on them(5x100's I believe), and the fronts just seem to stick out way too far.... It's running 225/45/17 up front, which the right one rubs occasionally which is the reason I ordered a new lower control arm.

The rear's are running 235/45/17, and they rub like hell...... If I'm forced to keep them, I'll try rolling the lip, and flaring the back fenders slightly, I'll also go to a narrower shorter tire(225/45) just to help it out...

They look good, But almost aren't worth all the hassle.....

BTW..... What do you mean by "SUV'd"?

"SUV'd" Was hit in the back by a Ford SUV on the Coast Highway just in front of the Ferrari deal and behind the Balboa Bay Club. Was on my way for misc. gaskets and exterior stuff to prep the car for painting.

Another three inches into the back and I would have lost the rear glass. As it is now the hatch closes and seals but I figgure that the body work required to replace the bent panels will tweak the opening out of square.

Seen the teen coming with her head turned taking to her friends and only at the last split second did she turn and look at what was in front of her.

Oh well. Living in old Porsche heaven I do have a better selection of well kept 944's but did not plan on giving up on my first 944 so easy.

P.S. The spokes do "make" the black 944. Would be a shame to have to replace them with something else. The rims I have were part of an 86 944 automatic I bought for the engine. Rims were part of the $500 deal. the 86 had an engine fire that would have cost over $1,000 in parts just to get running again. Then there would be the replacment of the hood and the repainting of the front fenders, center section and headlight covers.

Yeah, I like the look too. My wife just gives me that line "It doesn't look like a Porsche without the Porsche wheels on it." Maybe if I can get the wheels to fit right, I'll get some of the Porsche crest center cap stickers Then I can say they are Porsche wheels by BBS, it's the rare '83 944 option
