Uh oh,
I was misinformed. The car passed the test in the shop, but failed at the testing station. Back to square 1. ![]() I really needed it fixed. I broke my truck at lunch today. Something in the steering came apart and I've got front wheels going opposite directions. I can't drive it, and it's 25 miles from the house. Wonderful. I had to get a taxi back to the office. The turbo has been in this shop for over seven weeks now. Since two other mechanics have had their shot at it, I'm left with nowhere else to go. These guys are highly recommended locally, and it just ain't happening. This is not worth it. ![]()

There has to be something logical causing this, did you get any of these shops to run a compression check? Do you have a bad valve or something?

I can't say if they did or didn't do a compression test. Right now I'm trying to figure out what the He!! happened to my truck today.
The emissions tests were changed for this year, so this car has no history of passing a test this stringent. The easy and obvious culprits have been exhausted long ago. That's why I turned it over to the experts. We know the DME is not original, but you would figure the custom chips I had made for this application would compensate. To sum up: The later 951s had a 28 pin DME. This one has been replaced (before I bought it) with an earlier 24 pin unit. I talked to Danno at Guru, and he put together a chip set to work in this car. (24 pin w/a K26/8) Seemingly we were there, when they told me we were good to go. I guess not. They thought the 3 bar FPR was giving too much fuel, therefore NOx was too high, but now we're just grabbing a$$. Emphasis on $$.

For the sake of the emissions test why not borrow or purchase the correct DME with stock chips?
I have to put my stock chips in for emissions in order to pass.

Sorry Sid, I would have lost it by now.
I like that idea of a loner dme swap. If you can find someone with a spare lyin around it might put you back in business. Hell, might be worth buying one from a salvage yard if you need it once a year.

![]() It may come to that. It's just pathetic we even have to consider that. Come to think of it, I don't know what DME he has available. I tried the test with the stock 24 pin chip in the existing unit, and it failed. I don't know how we'd benefit for swapping 24 pin units. I don't know if he has a 28 pin w/stock chips available. His car is an 87, therefore it's a 24. After all the $ I've thrown at this car, I don't relish the idea of buying another DME. After all, it runs fine with this one, just not clean. Plus that's still no guarantee of a pass. I think I'd lose it completely if I bought another DME and it still didn't pass. I'm also seething over the story I got from these guys. As I recall details of conversations, they clearly lied to me about having this inspection done. $ucks to be me.

Would you be able to put some horribly restrictive catalytic converter on just for the test. Like one approved by Greenpeace.
Get it real hot with some hard driving right before the test. Just a thought Ed

Sid-
If you haven't already, try Koby Motor Werks. They are Porsche specialists that I have used in the past. It's in the Westheimer/Richmond area.
