I am limited on funds and need to do 2 major bits of work to my 87 924s.
1. I need to replace the timing belt/water pump apporx. $800-900. 2. Full clutch job approx $1100-1300. I am going to attempt 1 of these and have my mechanic do the other. My question is which should I do and which shoulod I have my mechanic do. I want to do the easiest of the 2. I have a compressor and most of the tools for either one. Are there detailed instructions for the water pump/timing belt change floating around out here? I have read over the clutch change procedure and it seems I could do that, but I don't really like the idea of working completely under a car on jack stands! I could do the timing belt w/out even jacking...correct? Thanks for responses. Jason |

Just do them both - they're a pain but well worth it because you learn much more about your car and save big $$$ doing it.

Why is a clutch costing you $1300?!? Go for an aftermarket spring-centered clutch (forget those shoddy rubber-centered pressure plates) and with labor it should cost you under $1000. My mechanic is doing mine for $800, but he is a Porsche specialist and it was previously his car

Click "944 Garage Shop Manual" at this site:
http://porsche-944-garage.tripod.com/ The pump and belt is not that hard, but it takes some time. /Magnus |

My mechanic just came back at me today with a price of $1800 to do all belts/waterpump and a full clutch job. Should I just have him do it? This is about $300 more than I wanted to spend, but is it worth it to save my back and hands?

we have a 1984 944 and it needs a clutch, and i am doing the belts and pump myself:
got the ENTIRE clutch kit for $300 from rennlist.com got all the belts for $50 all i need is the water pump, and tensioner pulleys. (probably get from Hershey swap meet) labor for clutch job: $500 labor for belts and stuff: $0 (DIY) total investment for everything: under $1000. time to get it all done: one weekend (clutch will be done on a friday, then belts will be saturday). good luck! obin |

jason, unless you're confident that you can do the work, have all the tools, manual/instructions, have the lift & space, i'd just have your mechanic do it all. $1800 for those items is a good deal (if you have a good mechanic).

Mechanic is Porsche certified. I feel confident that I could both of these jobs if I had proper guidance. Clutch looks pretty straight forward. Just a ***** laying on the floor under jack stands!

Jason, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to do both jobs. The clutch isn't hard at all, just time-consuming. You have to remove around 23,000 bolts. The timing is also easy, and not very time-consuming. Even the haynes manual covers both of these well enough. You gain two things by doing these on your own.
1 - You learn how your car works and how to work on it 2 - You would end up only paying around 500-700 dollars for both jobs. Good luck and let me know if you need any help if you decide to do it yourself. Dave |
