DME compatibility

someone told in a recent post that a 85-86 AFM + DME could be used in an early car to add some performance and upgradibility with a chip
only 85-86 DME's are compatible ?
wich other years can be used ?
any notion of compatibility of other MOTRONIC DME's used in BMW, OPEL , ALFA's , CITROENS ......

The newer dfm and afm can be used in the early 944. and much easier to chip it. They must be replaced as a set. FRWilk's site can give you more particulars of the enhancments.

I have been thinking of doing this myself. I couldn't find any info on FRWilk's site though on this swap.

Early DME's. Late DME's 944S DME's, Turbo 951 DME's, 968 DME's.

Did I miss any model?

If you were to put a turbo engine and trans into an N/A car, could you put a turbo DME on it and make it run good? Just curious....

I thought this was how it went

Engine swap = dme swap on most cars

(yeh, yeh, I know, these aren't most cars )

Engine and tranny swap though... Isn't it cheaper to just buy a 951

It wouldn't be cheaper if your dream was to rebuild a 2.5 L Turbo into a 2.8 L and you bought a decent used turbo engine and decent tranny. I have lots of dreams...

The only reason I would put a later DME into an early car is that I could not get the early DME. Besides the AFS voltage (also the AFS has a different resistance curve) there is really no difference in the performance.

The best way to change the performance curves is to chip the DME. This will expand the torq curve and get rid of some of the bumps.

To use a late model DME with an early engine you have to swap the AFM as well.

I've done this to my '84, and it works fine.

FRWilk has an adapter board for the early DME to allow plug in chips and couple of chip options for the early 944 that have received rave reviews

Yep. With a late DME and AFM you can run an aftermarket "performace" chip.

I was lucky enough to get a used DME with an AutoThority chip, and I have since accquired a stock chip plus a 'beta' version of F.R. Wilk's "Power Prom."

F.R.:

Yeah, I still have it. I ran it in the '84 for a while, but I have put that car back to stock so I can sell it.

I have an '87 that I'm sorting out, and as soon as I get that finished I'll do some "chip swapping" and see what I get.

Fred, I am confused by your statement: "That is because it is the last thing anyone should be doing. I have helped people put early DMEs in 86s & 87s. This is me being serious."
Why is this the last thing people should be doing?

It's very easy to do the swap. I have posted the question to Mr. Wilk as to why he feels it should not be done. So far I have recieved no reply.

Remove original DME. Install late model DME. Remove original AFM. Install late model AFM. Adjust idle speed and CO (carbonmonoxied) level as necessary.
