Turbo change and differences
Well here is a comparison between the old and new turbos. BTW the turbo is a ***** to remove!...Both the intake and exhaust housing on the T04E are larger, the intake being much larger and the exhaust housing being wider (probably the same as the "S" turbo exhaust housing). Also the shaft is larger on the T04E - if the old one is 6mm, the new one is probably at least 8 mm or 1/3 inch.

bigger is usually better, but i just wonder about the spool time.

I knew a guy who took a interesting approach to turbo lag. He had an early 300ZX with an absolutly enormouse turbo in it. Which would probably take forever to spool up. But he added a 75hp nitrouse jet. And a computer than only put the squeeze on for a few seconds at WOT. So when he stomped it. It went. And his nitrouse bottle lasted for quite a while.
Damn that car was fast. ------------------ If you drive it, Race it Dave '87 944 |
Blackfoot - this actually a "small" turbo compared to many other out there. The spool should be close to stock believe or not. I drove a Huntley stage II and couln't discern any difference between that car and my stock k26/6! Remember, on a car without a boost enhancer or boost controller (and with cyclic valve) the stock turbo will spool slow in accordance with the computer's control.

You may have to do some plumbing on the the coolant line leaving the turbo. When I replaced turbo with a larger one, the kit recommended I bend the water return line. Of course it would not bend without breaking so I broke them and braised them back together. I think it also necessitated a lower profile thermostat on the turbo to fit under the intake.
While you are at it, now might be a good time to reseal the upper balance shaft housing because it will not clear the compressor side of the turbo. My turbo has to come off to get balance shaft housing off. Think about the little o-ring seal on the end of the housing. For a 50 cent seal, you might have to remove the turbo! |
Nice! Cant wait to see it done...How much HP and Torque do you think you will have after your done?

Realistically and reliably probably about 350hp and 350tq at the flywheel. About 380-400 at the limit.
