The car starts now! But idle is WAY too high!

I finally got the hybrid 944NA / 944S to start! I'm was so happy/suprised, I almost crapped my pants! (Nothing hooked up from the headers back) =)

But now that it's running there's a couple more things that need "fine tuning".

The tach isn't working right now (but I'm pretty sure I know how to fix that) but the car sounds like it's idling somewhere between 3k and 4k. I'm thinking maybe it's the TPS (throttle positioner sensor), but I'm not sure how to test it to see if that's it. If you guys have any methods I could try, that would be awesome!

Is there anything else I should be looking at?

The engine is an '84NA with an '87NA brain, AFM, and wiring harness. This has all been integrated into an '87S body.

She really wants to run, just a little too fast at the moment... =)

Thanks!

-Tony

Wow, my car is an 87S. I could tell you how to adjust the TPS( but its a real pain in the A) on the 16v engine. You disconnect the DME connector and use an Ohm meter at terminals 52 and 24. but it is probably different on your 84 engine. My TPS was out of adjustment once but it didnt affect the idle. Have you check for vacuum leaks. That would be my first guess. Look around the idle air regulator or especially any thing on the intake manifold. Good luck. Why did you get rid of the S motor.

Naver had an "S" motor. After flipping my '84NA I bought a 944S body (minus the motor) and simply put the old '84 engine in there since I knew it ran fine. I'll check for a vacuum leak, thanks!

Hey I just thought of something. Did you replace the engine wiring harness when you changed the engine. The connector on the idle air regulator has 3 terminals for the 8v and 2 terminals for the 16v. they wont interchange.

pretty sure he had to...the DME (and wiring) for the 16v 944S with knock sensors etc. is waaayy different than the 8v 944NA

oh...he said changed the harness

(so he may have the old 944S engine harness you need ! )

I got the message. As I understand it the engine wiring harness went with the "S" motor along time ago. All I bought was the body from a guy who was trying to install a LT1 in it. He sold the 944S engine to help offset the cost of the vett engine. Sorry I can't help, but I'll keep my eyes pealed.

The tach is wired to a pin on the DME. If you have the electrical schematic for the 87 you can look it up. Most likely it was cut by the PO.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Thanks, but I know what caused the problem. I was under the car and I saw the pressure switch on the power steering pump was unplugged. I started to plug it up(an here's where I screwed myself)and I noticed there was an extra wire inside the boot. I thought it came off of the connector so I reconnected it to the connector plugged it up and went for a test drive.
Well the burnt wiring starts at the p/s pump pressure switch and goes through the harness all the way back.
What a mess. I pulled the intake and cut open the harness and all the wiring is melted together and I dont think I can repair it. Any suggestions on where to find a used engine harness. Thanks, Lonnie
