944 clunking
Hello all! I recently picked up a clean 87 944 for 5200. It clunks when you let out the clutch. When going through the gears it does too. If I shift her just so it almost goes un noticed. When I'm cruising and step on it or lift my foot off the pedal she kind of chatters and clunks. From what I've read on this board it seems these problems are almost common. When I was under the car I wiggled the tranny. It moved almost a half an inch each way from center. Is this normal? I like to think it is the drive shafts (lots of grease around boots, but they are still intact). I just borrowed a 12 point 8mm to remove and inspect them. Could it be the rubber center clutch?... torque tube?... Mike

Most likely the CV joints. The tranny does have a bit of side to side, that's normal. Also, don't ever jack up the car under the tranny, you could destroy the upper tranny mount or break the case. Use the jack points listed in the factory literature. Welcome to the group, these cars are like crack, if you aren't careful, money can disappear at a frightening rate.

Clutch disk. Rubber center is sheared and the center is hitting the safety ears on the outter part. Most likely why the PO sold the car. Will not last much longer.

If SoCal is right, it sounds like it's time to upgrade to the spring center clutch.
Welcome to the board!

Forgot about that monstrosity. Pull the starter and if you find rubber chunks, it could well be the clutch. While you've got the axles off for that job, why not r&r the cv joints as well. Welcome to the "while I'm in there" club
