Post rear stabalizer linkage arms

on my 87 944na there are some little linkage arms that connect the ends of the rear stabalizer bar to one of the suspension members (one arm on each side). I just noticed that the little rubber bushings that sit in each end of mine have slid out and i have virtually no stabalizer bar. on the bushing connected to the suspension arm the little ring slid away from the center of the car towards the tire and on the lower ring and bushing that connects to the stabalizer bar, the ring also slid away from the center of the car and towards the tire. it did this on both sides. the bushings are all chewed up on one side, and the flange is gone, so i pressed the bushings back in in the opposite direction that they were sliding so that the remaining flange on the edge of the bushing will hopefully hold them in.

why did they slide out?

how are you supposed to get those things back in there, i had to use a vise and lubricate them with some armor all type protectant, i used that instead of grease, because as i understand petroleum products are bad for all of the suspenson bushings.

did i do the right thing?

thanks,

p.s. i know i could buy some new bushings, but im waiting on that for a while.

thanks
