I resently had my 83 944 auto trans overhauled. Less tha 200 miles later the
trans would not shift properly. The transmission shop found the bushing in the torque converter broke loose and the flex plate cracked 2/3 the way around the hub . They sais the flex plate caused the converter to fail. A new flexplate a converter was installed at my expence. Less than 200 miles later the flexplate again failed completely while driving less than 10mph in a parking lot. The car was driven very easy, with no hotrodding after the trans overhaul. I feel either the input shaft in the trans or the drive shaft is bent. However, after picking the car up after the trans overhaul I could hear what sounded like a loose muffler bracket near the engine. I would very much like input from someone more knowledgeable than myself as to the probable cause of the flex plate failure and the best way to identify the problem before taking it back to the transmission shop where it is still under warranty. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gene |

Hi Gene,
I've seen an auto in a buddy's shop with that big rubber thing up where the clutch goes in a manual, and it was shot & messed up the bearings in torque tube. This might be your problem. My buddy's name is Manual Santana, & shop number is 864-229-9714 in SC. He may have some advice. With a manual trans, there is a spec for how far the shaft sticks out from the rear flange, 1/2" to 9/16" I think. There probably is a spec for autos & yours may not be correct. drew1 [This message has been edited by drew1 (edited 04-13-2001).] |
