Arrow she's back...

I finally have my car back on the road. Well, kinda. I got an engine out of an 87 924S that had a small engine fire on it with 69,000 miles. Long story made short the engine is in the car now and I have about $1000 in the swap (including 1 new motor mount and misc. seals). So I think I did pretty good on the whole price thing and finding a low mileage engine.

I have a few problems though
1. My fuel pump leaks gas so I"m replacing that right now (thus the reason behind why it isn't driven right now)
2. I have a rattle in the cat. it's really loud and I need it gone. It is coming from the front part of the cat. and my dad said that it's probably just a pipe that needs to be re-welded inside the cat. Is there a chance he's right? Or is the cat. in need of hallowing (no emissions testing in SD)
3. Also, I have a vibration at only around 4000 rpms in what feels like the drivetrain, any clue what it is?

You did get the whole 924S as a parts car?

Most all exhaust rattles are loose heat shields. Or broken hangers.

Engine rpm related vibrations can be balance shafts are not lined up. Did you replace both the timing and balance shaft belts on the "new" engine? You should have.

Other vibration causes are disitigrating clutch (the rubber center) or not replacing or even forgetting the pilot bearing. Could also be the bearings in the torq tube.

Rule of thumb: Never, never, never replace an engine with out seriously checking and replacing any and all clutch components as necessary.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Congrats Gearhead!
Almost back on the road!!!

While your doing that fuel pump have you ever researched an aftermarket pump "upgrade"? When mine goes I am considering this though I don't have any info yet.

I'm adapting a pump out of an older Volkwagen that had a 4 cylinder (it was laying around at the shop and my dad said I could have it). So I'm going to make sure it'll flow enough when I get it to start working again, I have it sitting in penetrating fluid trying to get it to work again.

The rattle is not a heat sheild or loose exhaust hange. I can hear it rattle when I hit the cat. EXCEPT the rattle is coming from the very front part of it.
FTY, I'm hoping my dad is wrong so I can do a little bit of test pipe action

The engine has a new timing belt and new balance shaft belt. I just bought the engine from a junk yard. I woul dhave loved to rip it all down, put new rings, seals, and bearings in it; but the funding isn't there.

AND I had thought about upgrading the pump, but my pocket book is really quite empty and I doubt I'll even have the car next summer. I'm still unsure of what I'll replace it with, I go on little spurts with other cars but in the end I always end up going back to the 951 idea!

The car was on the road for about a week and a half which is when I got back from my vacation and was on my way out to hallow the cat. I get out to the shop and that was when I realized the pump was leaking.
