Post klanging noise in back rear drivers side?

There is a klanging noise coming from the drivers side rear (sounds like by the wheel.) When I push in the clutch it seems to stop. Also seems when i let off the accelorater it starts making it.

Had/have the same problem with my 86 944 turbo. It's the CV joint on the driver side. The driver side fails first becasue the exhause is routed right beside the CV joing and the grease is heated up by the exhaust.

2 Solutions.

1 Replace the 2 CV joints - not difficult
and covered in the HAYNES manual.

2. This has worked for me for the last few months. (I'm waiting for the warm weather to do #1) Jack up the rear qtr and with the tranie in neutral and parking brake off, reach under the car, grab the drive shaft and slide it back and forth (inboard and outboard) a few times. With my car the noise goes away for a couple of months.

Good luck

99% chance its your CV Joints. Not that bad of a job to do. Don't quote me on this, but I believe its a 12mm or 13mm hex head to get them off. Don't strip them!!!!

It's an 8mm 12-point allen head. Lisle makes a socket insert for it that you should be able to get at your local auto parts store.
Of course, it's possible that someone else has previously replaced your CV bolts with regular hex head ones, so take a look to see which you have.

Also, if it has not been done on your car you could replace the CV joint at opposite ends so that they actually spin in the opposite direction as before. I did this and have had no problems since. This is a cheap way to go, there is no point in replacing something if it possibly has a half-life left. Good luck.

Haynes manual is BS. Look at the FAQs by KGross....sorry I don't have the site on me...but it tells you things the Haynes doesn't
