Is the 944 in that realm, in any sense? Which Porsche cars are?

Any car that you can easily purchase for less than $10,000 is not an exotic car.
This therefore excludes all 944's including 951's. An exotic car is one that can not be easily obtained by trailer trash. |

Porsches aren't meant to be exotics...
To me the term implies, lot's of fun to drive, is very unique (but not quite beautifull), agressive, expensive, high maintenance, and weird. In otherwords, not desirable. You don't drive the exotic car to a friend's house, you drive it to night clubs, movies, etc. Ahmet ------------------ It's all the driver... |

Exotic cars are cars that are limited to road use...they are expensive and rarely seen in daily commutes.
(e.g. Porsche 911 Twin Turbos, 959s, Porsche 928 GTS) ------------------ Sorry Officer, my bag of crack fell and while trying to reach it my gun got wedged in between the gas and the brake causing me to speed insanely. |

Perhaps in it's day the 944/951 was an exotic but it was over produced and so now the values on it are low and all that. I would go as far as to say a 996 is an exotic as well.

ex·ot·ic (g-ztk)
adj. From another part of the world; foreign: exotic tropical plants in a greenhouse. See Synonyms at foreign. Intriguingly unusual or different; excitingly strange: exotic costumes from the Far East. See Synonyms at fantastic. ---- yes, the 944 is an exotic, so is the 951, so is the 924, and even [gasp] the 911. obin [This message has been edited by Obin Robinson (edited 04-16-2001).] |

I remember reading somewhere that the only exotic production Porsche is the 911 turbo. Ofcourse the 959 and upcoming Carrera GT are exotics as well.

Keith,
the info you read was possibly incorrect, or mis-quoted. we went into a LONG discussion on this a LONG time ago on another web site. the verdict was that since the definition of an "exotic automobile" was in fact vague, the true meaning of an "exotic car" was the same one as a "foreign car" there is no internationally-accepted definition for "exotic sports car". many times, the term "supercar" and "exotic car is used interchangeably" but this is inaccurate. as far as the 911 turbo being the only "exotic" porsche... that seems odd because it is neither the fastest; nor is it the most rare of all Porsche's production cars. hell, they made more 911 turbos than they made copies of MY 924. does that mean that a 911 turbo is a run-of-the-mill Porsche? as i indicated earlier, there is no accepted definition for an "exotic sports car". every time someone thinks they have the definition, then something else makes it incoorrect. it can't be solely based on production numbers, cost, or value, or marque... because as soon as you write that down, there's a bunch of odd kit cars out there that fits the definition of "exotic" better than a 911 turbo ![]() sad, but true. obin |

I was half joking. The term exotic is different than supercar, however both terms are vague and it's kind of silly (although fun when bored) to discuss whether or not certain cars are exotic. I thought I'd chime in and say my car was the only exotic just for the hell of it. Although I remember reading...

there's another dimension to the term "exotic". someone thought it had to do with styling. that can't define an exotic either because car design is a very precise art. design elements are very specific.
for example: Lotus Esprit is an Exotic car? Well, my Scirocco 16V is an Exotic car also because the design elements are the same. Porsche 911 is an Exotic car? Better include the VW Beetle, Datsun 240Z, and the Dodge Omni because those cars also have similar DESIGN elements within the interior and exterior. yeah, i wish there were was an internationally accepted definition, but too bad there isn't. obin |

Go to http://www.exoticcars.com
They have everything from Ferraris to 911s and Boxters to alas, PT Cruisers and Miatas. Well, it started to look like an exotic fleet... |

I'd expect exotic is more about limited production numbers.

I would have to agree with redNeckarsulm2. When I think of exotic, I think of something that isn't easily attainable. Not able to be affordable to the masses. So a rare car that has limited production and is very exspencive.

I wouldn't say a 924/944 is exotic at all!!
What I would say though, is that they are extremely well built, efficient good handling cars. You can own any Porsche and drive it anywhere, whereas an Exotic, like a Diablo or a F550 will probably let you down, or get vandalised when you get there!!! Yep, exotics are great, but give me a good old Porsche any day!!!! |

No no no, you have it all wrong.
Exotic cars are ALWAYS rare, sometimes expensive, sometimes radically styled, always desireable, and sometimes very very fast. For example, I would classify all Ferraris and Lamborghinis as exotic, but the only Porsches that make the grade IMHO are all the 911 Turbos, the 959 (of course!), the GT2 + GT3, the factory race cars, the 73 Carrera RS 2.7 (because of its high desireability), and some of the rarer models (916, 924 Carrera GT, 550, 904). What else makes the grade? DeTomaso Panteras, Viper GTS, DeLoreans (I know that they aren't fast and have a tendency to fall apart, but try justifying that they aren't exotic), POSSIBLY Corvette Stingrays, Lotus Esprits, Bugattis, Shelby Cobras, Jaguar XJ220s, McLarens, Mercedes CLKGTRs, BMW Z8s... the list goes on and on. |
