944s to S2 swap?

Here's a crazy idea, I wonder if you could put an S2 engine into a 944S with a minimum of S2 parts, i.e. just an S2 block and head? I suppose a chip could be cooked up to map the S2 fuel curve to the S DME. The AFM and injectors should be able to support 208HP, and a stronger clutch could be used. The tranny might die after a while but then could be replaced with a stronger unit.

If someone needs a motor or head for an S, they might have better luck finding a used S2 motor and swapping the whole thing and have a lot more power to show for their trouble.

not crazy, just not feasable.

whole drive train, electonic's, flywheel and sensors, uprate the brakes and suspension, gearbox/clutch

you'll be left with a car which is officially an "s" but has been heavily modified to an "s2" , cheaper to buy an s2 !

This has been done, and was written up in Excellence two years ago.

If you want, I can dig up the date of the issue: it would be helpful for you to get started on such a project.

Yes, I am familiar with the article. What I'm talking about is a bit different.

944s's are rare, yes? Parts are not cheap. S2's are more common, and complete engines are out there. Seems to me the stock 'S' harness could be put on the S2 motor with little fuss, and the S AFM is the same as the S2. I think the flywheel is the same also. Fuel lines, fuel rail, probably all the same. I don't know if the S has one knock sensor or two, but that could be dealt with.

I don't have an S, but reading about the trouble some people have repairing them I thought I'd start this conversation. If you could just toss an S2 long block and a chip into an S that might be a lot easier than finding or fixing a 2.5l 16v motor.

For an upgrade, I agree that selling the S and buying an S2 is a better option, but if you had an S and blew the motor or crashed the timing belt, this might be a better way to spend your money.

If you have a S with a blown motor the best thing to do is put a 944NA engine in it. I've done the S2 motor into a S conversion after all the work my thought was...now it just needs brakes, transmission, suspension and some other stuff and it will be finished.

The S2 is basically a bolt in, there's a bit of wiring to do if you want the tacho to work and some "modification" of the inner nose panel to get the air filter to fit. The oil cooler and everything else just bolts in.
Unless you install the diagnosis harness, troubleshooting any subsequent problems is not easy.
