I have the same problem every once in a while with the 924. Ususally is heat affecting the starter. However, if you manage to push start the vehicle, drive a short distance, and try a restart it usually works again. The area around the starter really needs a good heat shield as well as cool air.

Adrian, just a thought but if your remote alarm is CAT 1 it should be a combined alarm / immobliser. So if the original Porsche key fob immobliser is playing up, maybe the easy option would be to remove it.

hey alex,

ok, "true" cat 1 yes you are right.
but before I had the alarm fitted, I had already gone out and got 2 new keys (@ £40 a pop), so when I bought the unit prior to fitting I specifically asked them NOT to mess with the porsche immoby or bypass it. This was agreed.

However on the day of install the installer said that CAT1 means that the alarm immobys' the car, so I said do it or give me my money back.

so they frigged it, (I still got the CAT1 certificate), how it works is thus

1> alarm, is cat1 and immobylises a different part of the igntion system
2> immoby, still work as per normal

also CAT means
a> battery backed up siren
b> alarm brain in a armoured steel enclosure
c> remove brain unit you cant start the car
d> disconnect battery or feed to alarm and siren comes on


SO.... to start my car,

1> I disarm my car (alarm)
2> put the immoby key fob
3> start the car.

when I switch of the engine after 30'se's both alarm and immoby cut in,
in order to start the car I need to

1> posrche immoby (2 beeps)
2> press disarm button on alarm fob
3> starts

it sounds long winded, it only adds seconds to starts.

the reason being, I know of work arounds on the alarm system I have, which can if bypassed also unimmoblises the car, (cant expand but its very simple)

the Porsche immoby is slighly more difficult, its not immpossible but more of a problem.

belt and braces, I sleep better at night !

the Porsche immoby, when correctly fitted and working, does a good job

UPDATE

I took the seat out today,

and removed the brain unit,
its a porsche part (by Hamilton parker) the whole bast'd thing is POP-RIVETED to-gether, no access at all, and I aint drilling into it unless a last resort.

plus, the wire loom at the front is not plugged in, its a hard wire job.

so I'm going to fit a slimline 40mm fan in the front of the seat.

if it overheats, will try the fuse reset, (long term , maybe replace the unit, straight swapable, no programming) again last resort, but at £250 I might as well get a new technology one !

I'm with ronin on this one...these things work in desert heat...the one I had fitted in the UK works in Texas where my sunglasses melted on the dash...shouldn't be effected because it got hot a couple of days...that's unusual for the UK but these things should be made to work in Italy or Africa where it really gets hot inside a closed coupe with a black interior let alone a cab...

ditto. especialy considering the fact, like you said, they're working on other cars in much hotter climates. if the heat were solely to blame, then it would be a defective characteristic in potentially all of those units. if the problem is being caused by that unit, I'd say it's on its way out.

if you just kept a bottle of cool water around you could just toss some water under the seat whenever it acts up

hi all !

I'll go with the fan mod for the mo, with a view to rplacing the unit.

I think it didnt help that the unit was covered in carpet then buried under a seat.

dont forget in a coupe' you have shade, but when a top is down your getting the full blast of heat ,, again I see ya points it probably is on the way out,

maybe just monitor it for the moment after I put a fan mod/ thermal greeze on it

Just like a failing DME relay, wait for it to fail a few times so that you know the unit is definetelly the culprit and then get rid of it to avoid further embarassing situations. The unit relays will be the first to go before any of the electronics in the box.

the melting sunglasses was no exaggeration…or cassettes on the console…you cannot touch the steering wheel in Texas or Arizona…you leave a towel over it…short pants on the seats…..you’ll go right through the sunroof !
