need price estimate on my porsche 944 problem!

well im going to be buying my first porsche! its 85 944 na. it has some nice tasteful mods like a chip, turbo wheels, exhaust, and some interior do dads like a new shift knob and momo steering wheel. the guy thats selling has incountered a problem and wants rid of it since he'd rather put the $ into his house. its 2,k for the car. well i guess he says it needs a new ring and pinion or a clutch. he said that he pulled out of an intersection and it like seized up the tranny or something. well he took it back to the porsche place and they told him 9 times out of 10 its the ring and pinion or the clutch. im not going to buy it until i know for a fact what is wrong and how much its going to cost to fix. i know a porsche tech guy so i think i can get the work done cheaper. i guess im asking what do you guys think it is? he said that the car didnt shut off. and how much for the parts and how hard is it to fix?

dealer will want around $2500 for parts and labor on a clutch. you can call around and have it done for maybe 2000 or 1500.
make sure there is nothing else wrong with it. not being able to take it for a test drive may mask other problems all of which will be expensive to fix.

Here is and easy way to tell if the problem is the clutch or the tranny:

Pull the inspection plugs on the tranny, loosen the coupler bolts, slide the coupler towards the tranny input shaft so the coupler clears the torque shaft, and start the engine.

If the engine will idle, rev, and the clutch will engage and disengage, the the problem is most likely in the tranny.

Another place to look is the inspection port on the bell housing. There is a rubber plug on the driver side of the bell housing near the slave cylinder. Pull that plug and look for chunks of rubber and/or clutch plate material. You can also check the clutch slave cylinder and throw-out bearing fork operation via this port.

Another thing to check is the gear lube in the tranny. You can pull the fill and drain plugs (17mm Allen), drain the lube and inspect it for metal shavings.

Simpler than that. Take it out of gear and just reach into the inspection access hole at the trans and twist the drive shaft.

If the clutch is blown it will just turn around.

If the rubber donut on the clutch disk has seperated then the drive shaft will turn a little over 30 degrees each direction and stop with a clang.

If the drive shaft is tight then it's the trans.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Where would that hole be?

The biggest hole is at the lower front of the torque tube flange. Pull out the black rubber plug.

OR put the car in gear with the e-brake off and push it by hand. If it rolls smoothly then the clutch disk center is gone. If it rolls a bit either way then stops with a clunk-clang coming from the front then the clutch disk center has sperated but the safety ears are still catching (you would still be able to drive the car)

If the car doesn't roll at all in gear but in driving it you get a clunkity-clunk repeating noise from the rear then it's the ring and pinion. If the clunkity-clunk only happens in certain gears then that gear set is missing teeth.
