The time for a paint job is fast approaching. I have decided to do much of the work myself which will include buying the paint. I own a 1983 Guards Red 944. I plan on re-painting the car Guards Red. Can anyone point me in the direction as to where I can buy this paint? I have heard that a gallon would suffice. If this is wrong, please let me know how much I need. Thanks in advance!

Paint is sold in quarts, you will also need hardener if you are doing an integrated clear coat, or clear coat if you are applying it after the fact. Use any local auto paint supply even Napa sells paint. PPG makes a guards red clone that is the same mix as the factory. Sherwin Williams makes a guards red auto, but I don't think it looks as good, but it's chaper. Depending on you ratio of hardner to paint, which is based on temperature that you spray at you will need at least one quart of paint to cover a medium car once. If you can, use a urethane based paint. It's more noxious and harder to use than krylon but will look better. Also stay FAR away from "Western Auto Finishes." And unless you have painted a few cars before better pratice on a old fridge or something that stands upright. It will help you get a feal for painting flat surfaces, and help you avoid drips.

I am not actually going to paint the car myself. I located a well recommended individual who paints cars at his home. He is going to let me use his equipment and will help me prep the car. I have seen his work and it looks good. What needs to happen in terms of prep work? i.e. seal removal, mirror removal, etc. Thanks again!

Pull the door seals, and the taillights, also pop your sunroof and take that seal off as well, pull the windshield gasket as well. Good luck on the mirrors they take a special tool to remove, you have to pop the glass and work your way back through the mirror to unbolt it. The door handels are easy, mind the little plastic clips that attach the handel rods, they break easy. Pull your hood badge and use a hair dryer on your stone guards to get them off. You can get the new stone guards from the dealer, or go to one of those clear bra shops they make them for a lot less. I just finished mine yesterday I'll post some pics. Mine came out great!
