Oil Press Indication

86 944na..Ignition "off" gage reads Zero "0"..Ignition "On", gage reads 3.5 and no Idiot Light. Start Engine, gage reads 5 (pegged) no tapping or unusal engine noise. Leads to Oil Pressure Sender are secure. I am inclined toward a bad Oil Pressure Sending Unit. I would be greatful for your imput.

That's where I would start. But it could be the gauge.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Replaced Sending Unit, high oil pressure indication remains. Ignition off, indicator at zero. Ignition "on", indicator pegs at 5-bars with idiot light on. After engine start, idiot light goes out, indicator remains pegged at 5-bars regardless of eng temp or RPM. Changed oil and filter , no change. No unusual engine noises or tapping.

Eeek!

Do you have an ohm meter?

Per factory workshop manuals:

Post 85.1 (85.5)

1 bar = 29.6 ohms
2 bar = 65.3 ohms
3 bar = 98.9 ohms
4 bar = 133.6 ohms
5 bar = 184.0 ohms

Pre 85.5
0 bar = 10.0
3 bar = 116.0
5 bar = 184.0

So there is a difference between the oil senders too...

But! It's the same part number for 83 through 88 928 606 203 01.

Figure that out.

*raises hand* Done! It makes sense to me. Try taking out your Oil Pressure relief valve, seeing if it's scored or sumpin.

An 86 should have the encapulated oil pressure regulator. Can get dirty but doesn't score the sides of the block and hang up. Does have o-rings that quit o-ringing though.

Take Hugh's figures that he posted, and use a volt/ohm meter on the wires to the gauge. See what reading you get there, now compare them to readings at the sender itself. Could be an issue between the sender, DME and gauge(if the DME relays that info that is...)

I'd of liked to of said it's a bad gauge ground, but those usually make the gauge read on the low side, not the high side.

Yes check the sender first with out the gauge connected. One of the terminals to the ohm meter the other lead of the ohm meter to the engine ground.

You have cleaned the engine to chassis to battery grounds? Right??
