Passanger window problem
My passanger window will go down but not up. This happend every now and then. Usually if you pushed the button down then back up it would make its way up. Today it will not go up. I have never had a problem with it going down. And its the same with both switches. The drivers side is fine. Does anybody know why??
Also while i was under my car I found out that the ball joint has gone bad on the drivers side. Does anybody have a control arm for an 88' that they would like to sell? So the list grows on things that need replacing. |
The passengers side switch is wired through the drivers side switch. Pull them and clean the contacts inside each switch, also check the wiring. It is unusual for the down position contacts to go in both switchs though.

Here's a test. Have someone hold the passenger window switch in the non working direction and you just barely move the drivers side passengers window switch off center both ways.
One direction will let the passenger window work. This is only slightly off center and not all the way. As Roger said the lube in these switches gets really gummy. That and the years of corrosion causes problems. You can take the switches apart and clean them. Just watch out for the rocker contacts and make a note of the direction the U shaped spring contact goes. |
Thanks a lot! I will try that tomorrow.

Oops! This is an 88. Uses the smaller non spring end contacts. This makes it much easier as it's not critical which way the rocker contacts go back in. BUT! The two little check balls and springs in the rocker part of the switch are a PITA to get back in!
Make sure the pivot of the contacts as well as the ends are bunished. I use an electric erasure and different grit elements to clean mine. |
