Steering just get tight??
I just finished a 250 mile trip to Chicago yesterday afternoon (96 degrees and stifling hot!) when i went to turn left and met some unwelcome resistance. It was like someone else was pulling against me. this lasted for about 3 left turns. I pulled off and went lock to lock in a parking lot and let it sit overnight.
Now it seems to steer perfectly.. I gotta drive back today as well and I'm a little unnerved. Any ideas?? About time for a steering rack rebuild? |
Drain and flush the power steering fluid and see if it happens again.

Flush and fill?
I might have same problem. How do I fluch and fill power steering system?
|
I know this may sound strange, but...
my friend had the same problem and it turned out the wire that makes up the cooling duct to the back of the alternator had gotten pulled into the steering knuckle at the top of the rack. When he would turn right, the wire would unwind and loosen and when he would turn left the wire would tighten up and make it difficult to turn. Anyway, it should be easy to check for. Rob |
HMMMM? That is odd, but I will check into it.
Thanks! |
97 degrees is stifling!? shoot, it has gotten into the 110+ in texas this summer... i think i saw 118 one day on a electronic bank sign...
|
Yeah, but our mall sign up here in Kirkland showed that this summer and it sure wasn't right. I will believe it in Texas though :) I am glad the it stays dry when it gets hot up here.

I had a similar problem. 1983 944, made a quick u-turn, and after that, the steering was tighter than before. I don't have P.S., and it's been about 3 months since this happened. I havent done anything with it 'cause . . well . . it still works!?!?!

Aha... mine was a bit different... Sorry it took so long- I have been travelling quite extensively..
Seems as though the speedo cable let loose halfway up- and wrapped itself around the tie rod end, causing the right-turn only scenario.. New speedo cable to be installed soon!!! |
