problem solved yay!!!

if you guys were reading my post "clutch finished now car wont start" my friend and i finally found out what happened. SPIKED DME. as i stated in my post i forgot to put in the ground strap from the firewall to the bell housing and that spiked my dme. i borrowed my friends dme and it started right up. man, what a costly mistake. my father, as i write this post, is troubleshooting my spiked dme. he is a good electronics tech, his hobby. i have another dme that i pulled out of my parts car and the contacts were corroded and he is cleaning the contacts as well. i will try to see if it works tomorrow. keep your fingers crossed for me, wish me luck. thanx to EVERYONE who helped me troubleshoot my problem. if it wasnt for you guys i probably would have never figured it out and would have to send it to a specialist. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

Congratulations.
If you remeber me, mine still sits in the shop and the mechanic cannot figure out the problem.
If your dad finds the bad component(s) in the DME, let us know which one it is, assuming that we could purchase one.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

wow, i never would have guessed that one.... unless i was there in person. there's a dozen or so things you can think about when someone describes a problem on their car. when you see the car in person however, there's another thousand things that you'd notice. i'm pretty good with electronics (won an award from the Army Corps of Engineers when i was back in high school for an electronics project i made). but the problem with electronic problems is that without seeing things in person, you assume that certain things are connected, or working properly.

in any case... nice to see things are working again!

the welding w/DME connected could've caused that, as I stated earlier...
Congrats on the solution.

Hi Mike, yes i do remember you and your situation. man, i feel for you. your car had the same problem as my car. by chance, did you replace the dme or have a friend with the same year 944 and dme. my father didnot see a blown circut or vein in the board so it maybe in the ic chips. btw, Obin would you know how to troubleshoot the dme or where and how to begin to look for trouble in the circuitboard. both of my dme are no good and im using my friends dme till i can get one (nice guy my friend). any help will be greatly appreciated. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

The inside of one of those DMEs looks like the have a lot of propritory chips, transistors, voltage regulators, etc. It might be awful hard to get the pin outs & cross refereence for troubleshooting & replacement.

Mine's still in the shop!!!!
RE:
On those old circuits, if the tracks are in good shape and there are no visible cold solder joints the most common problem is the drying out of the electrolytic capacitors.
Your probably better off to trade the unit in to someone who does repairs rather than attempt repairs and mess it up.

Drew gave me the following info about a DME repair shop. (Thanks Drew.)

"... Try George Beuslink, 944 Ecology, in NY, USA. He'll test yours if he has car available, and sell you a working one
right. I think 944 Ecology has a Web Site, his phone is 845/658-9593 according his Panarama add. Tell him you
want yours back if it tests bad because he sells to a rebuilder.

He is a good guy, has great knowledge, and will be glad to shoot the bull about your problem..."

A friend of mine did a routine tune up and fried his computer. Every mechanic in the repair business WILL eventually fry a computer. Don't feel bad, I have my own tales of woe. Aloha, Neal

as luck would have it i found a dme on ebay. i snatched it up using "buy it now". i e-mailed the guy and told me it came off a 85 944 that had a light front hit. the engine was running fine before he took it out. to verify the dme he told me he will put it in his car to see if it still works before he sends it out. im using my friends dme till i get mine. p.s. does anyone know who will buy dme's for cores, i have 2 bad dme's.

i have an 87 944S and my starter went out (it cracked). it spent 4 months in the shop without starting. it turned out they put the wrong starter in and it was turning the engine backwards.

asidrave 05-03-2001 09:33 PM

sorry Andrew but i have to laugh. its always something, like my blown dme and your starter, that you would never think would cause such a problem. btw, Mike, how is you car coming along? any good word yet?
