alternator problem??

I was on my way to work the other day and I noticed that the battery light came on. I made it to work and drove ok. All the time with the light on. My question here is ....Is it definately the alternator??
How much does it cost to repair? rebuilt?? or buy new??
Many thanks,
Brian

Brian,
BEFORE you replace the alternator, drive to a Kragens and have them test the output ( for free) of the alternator. It should test out, without a load, at about 13.8 to 14 volts. Then you will know where to start.

Hi Brian It sounds like you might need new brushes, but first check all of the battery connections and check your fuses also look at back of the alternator, for the wire connections there.
If you dont find anything out of order remove the white plastic piece from the back of the alternator (Diconnect the battery first) this piece is called the voltage regulator, or brush holder it is held on by 2 screws, go to NAPA and ask them for a set of brushes made by Echlin part # E455,about $6.00 get your soldering out and remove the old brushes you might have to cut the old solder tip off with some side cutters as the wire is pinched into place then soldered, repace the brushes and install the holder connect all the wires back to the battery and check for a charge if no change let me know......Stan
