Smile Newbie on this board

Just stopped by to sign up and say hi. I will try not to ask to many dumb questions.

Just bought my first Porsche
1984 944 Metallic Platinum 63,000 orig miles
stored every winter... cool car.
My wife thinks I am crazy but I sold my 1995 BMW 325i with 33,000 miles to get this instead. (She can't drive stick... tee hee)

Exclamation

I guess after following this board for a few months my first big fear is the timing belt. This car has been WELL taken car of. The previous owner just replaced the clutch, master and slave cylinders, and water pump last summer before he put it away for the winter. Here in Ontario you must pass a safety inspection when transferring ownership which it did with no problems. The same mechanic has worked on it for the last 6 years. The problem is he can't remember when the timing belt was last changed, as the car hasn't been driven much in the last 2 years, and he lost many records in a fire a few years back. He says he checks them every time someone brings a Porsche in for service (as he did for the safety check) But it makes me nervous not really knowing when it was done. he says the belts looked fine. How much can he tell by site? I really don't want an engine meltdown like some of the pictures I have seen. This car will be my daily driver (1 mile to work)

Thoughts?

As far as the timing belt goes....when in doubt - replace DEFINITELY! I would consider the H2O pump also since it is right there.

With the miles - it is due to be replaced. If the guy can't remember, it was probably done at 30K. The water pump is usually good for about 100K. If you want to wait until the next timing belt on the pump you could.

Sorry I went back and edited my original post. The water poump was replaced at that time as well.I would have assumed he would have had a good look at the belts at that time....no?

Most good mechanics will change the timing belt with a water pump or at least give you the option. It is one of those "since we already have all of this off, you are not looking a large increase in labor" kind of thing. Once again - if in doubt replace it!

~$1200 You should get all new pulleys and oil seals while they are in there too for that price.

OUCH!
Good thing I had lots of "spare" cash left from selling the BMW for these items. Or so I have convinced the wife.
