:( Found crack in the paint

Whats a good paint job cost now a days? exterior, door jams all the works. anyone know?

Wanted to paint it before this, but now I guess I have a real reason to.

I was suprised how nice my old Chevy truck looks after $500 spent at Maaco.

It's all in the prep work.

I had an additonal question for you that I meant to ask earlier, is the crack possibly forming over older body work?

I have seen several large paint cracks appear over areas where the Bondo was too thick from a previous repair. When the Bondo started to split, so did the paint.

True!

If your are willing to do the prep work yourself then have someone spray it you could probably get a great job for about 2K, but thats if you leave it the same color. Changing the color can get expensive.

I know the owner of the local Maaco.

When the spray man does nothing except squirt paint on cars for forty hours a week, he gets pretty good at it.

I am way too picky for Maaco, they must issue the prep guy one piece of sandpaper for the whole job, I have never seen a Maaco job that didin't have overspary, orange peel, or sanding marks. They just go too fast, painting a car correctly involves pratically tearing it down to nothing. Your not going to get that from the "ambassador" paint package.

It also seems that flex additive is not something they know much about. I keep meeting ricers that have Maaco jobs on their bolt on body kits and the paint is flaking off anywhere it flexes.

I just can't use a body shop that has coupons in my local home mailer. Just my preferance, but I like the look of new Glasurit pain on a P-car.

I gotta question. I have a stone chip about 3mm around. The paint immediately around it is bubbling up. I want to stop this from getting out of hand. What can I do? Its right next to the badge on the nose.

Notes: car was repainted about 2.5 years ago, PO job. I think he spent a lot, over 2K. I've had lots of positive comments about the quality of the respray.

If the paint is bubling up the problem is not on the surface and the only way I know of to repair it is to sand it down and repaint. Once the paint begins to go it ages rapidly. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but on the bright side its a small part that you can remove and have painted fairly inexpensivly.

The Maaco owner I know hates doing ricer's body kits. He explains the differences between steel and fiberglass and what it takes to do the job right, and they are never willing to pay the extra money to do it right. Then they come back a month later, expecting Maaco to do it over again right, at no cost.

The guy who recently painted my 911 (beyond beautiful) told me that modern paints do not need an extra flex additive anymore. There are enough plastic parts on newer cars that paint has been reformulated to not need the additives.

I just shot some fiberglass running boards the other day with PPG Omini and I used flex additive, the manufacturer "PPG" states in the mix sheet that they make no concession for flexable parts unless additives are used.

If it were true that flex agents were incorperated you would not see cheap respray's with paint falling off the bumpers. I found that for some reason Macco hates using flex additive, or good quality hardner due to the fact that the drying and flash times are longer. When you strictly do work on a volume level you can't have a car sitting in a booth the entire day drying.

I also know a Macco owner from back when I was wrenching, and the econnomics of Macco is entirely volume based, not necessarly quality based.

Yes, Maaco's profit is based on volume. If you bring a valuable classic to my friend's shop, he will tell you that you're better off going somewhere else that can put the time needed to do a quality job.

My 944 is a track toy, and I would be happy with a Maaco job on it. Perfect for a used Chevy truck, too. But that was never an option for the 911. The spray man at this particular Maaco is great. It's possible that the spray man at your local franchise started painting cars yesterday.
