Post Dash Cracks

I don't have any and would like to keep it that way.

What causes them in the first place, getting hot from sitting in the sun? If so, the PO must have always parked in a garage, or never took it out much during the day. My 951 sleeps in the garage at night, but that doesn't help when you use the car during the day. If I use a reflective sun shade in the windshield when parked, will that prevent cracks?

Checked the 5/8 and 5/10 posts, but nothing was mentioned about what causes the cracks and if a windshield sun shade would prevent them. Any ideas?

possible cause for dash cracks -> Armorall

my 86 car had a perfect dash until last September. The car gets sunlight on the dash most of the day but sometimes, I use a shade. In September, my wife and son were helping to clean the car. Without thinking about it, my son put Armorall on the dash, the leather seats and, well basically soaked the interior with the stuff. Somewhere about November, I began to see cracking around the defroster vent slots. This spring, with the heat, those cracks grew quite a bit. I now have a dash cap in place because once the cracks start, it never stops.

My guess is that somehow the silicon in the Armorall effects the hard dash surface. Armorall is also a major dust magnet and has left my interior with that slimy used-car look and feel. Most of the effect are gone now and I no longer stock the stuff in my garage. I do recommend it to my ex-wife.

windshield sun screen, good idea, helps to lower the interioir temp and prevents sunfade on the seats and steering wheel..

Thumbs up

I have had the same experience with Armorall. I put it on a perfect dash on my first 924 and within a month and a half the dash started to crack. Since then, my other two 924's both came with the cracks. However I found a small custom dash mat place that did a very nice job of covering up the problems.

weird......i've been using armorall on mine and the cracks haven't gotten any worse then they were when i bought the car. and there are no cracks anywhere else.....I use that ultra shine crap too... I should check the ingredients in armorall and see what causes cracks. but if you have no dressing to apply to your car, how will it look all nice and shiny in the interior???

Thats interesting about the Armorall. I used to use it but stopped after seeing the residue on the area dry out. Probably anything with solvent would do the same deed. I changed to Murphy's oil soap and have never seen my 95% interior looking so fine! It's Murphy's for me for a clean car and no solvents. My house keeper suggested it!
