Ok, I have some questions. I once asked about adjusting the ide via the screw. Well everyone said NO dont mess with it. Well my 944 idels dead on 900. At this speed it has a slight shake to it. I know everyone will say motor mounts but both are new. If I apply a mere 50rpms to the current 900 I get a silky smooth idle. Now if I should not mess with the screw why is it there? And why does my manual say adjust idle as part of service?

Go to Paragon Products tech session - it shows you how to adjust. Basically you just have to disable the idle stabilizer which is VERY easy (one wire to diagnostic port). After that, turn the idle screw.

There are two different procedures for the early and late cars, I can run through it if you like, which model do you have?

Since nobody else attended to this topic:

Most people will advise against setting idle speed because several sensors need to be disconnected, the air/fuel mixture will need to be reset, and idle speed monitored by an external gauge, as the factory gauge on the dashboard's not accurate enough. Also, the CO level needs to be monitored.

Basically on an early car:

Let the car warm up, set to specified rpm via the screw, detach oxy sensor/(disable idle speed control circuit) by firewall, check/adjust CO level (on the airflow meter). During tests, no external loads should be placed on the engine, AC off, no accessories running, etc.

On a late car:

Same as above, but repeat setting the idle speed, after the oxy. sensor is reconnected. Idle on late model cars is 840, early cars depend on accessories. Also, on the late cars, the idle speed correction circuit can be shut off by bridging B and C terminals on the diagnosis plug.
