Post Transmission Seals

I'm replacing the clutch in my 1986 944na. The tranny was grungy - the axle seals are leaking slightly. I removed the old ones using a big vise-grips, and tapped in one new one using a big socket. It appears fairly straight. I tapped the second new one in too far and destroyed it getting it back out. The back of the seal does not rest against a ridge so getting it in right is a judgement call. Suggestions?
