Fuel in air box

Having some problems. Have been trying to figure out why, after sitting out in a very hard rain, my 87 NA won't start. I went through and tested a few suggestions I found on previous posts, so far no luck but I'm pretty new at this so hopefully l'll figure it out eventually.
Anyway, the here is the problem I couldnt find in the archives. After turning the ignition on and/or trying to crank the engine to find a spark, I have discovered that fuel is finding its way into the air box. Is this to be expected since it's not being ignited hence nowhere else to go or is there something else wrong? Is there anyway this could hurt anything? Am I an idiot for not pulling the fuel pump fuse? I'm pretty much learning as I go so be gentle. Thanks for any suggestions.

a few more details please

Hi,

Could you tell us a bit more about the 'fuel' you find ... how much (approx.) do you find - trace amounts or ?

Is your air filter soaked with fuel as well or is it still dry?

Regards,

DL

After it was all said and done the airbox was full, including soaking the filter. I took out the fuel pump fuse and since havent had the problem. Just hoping I didnt screw something up.

Heavy rain with later model 944:

Check the DME. It's most likely soaked from all the water leaking in through the holes under the battery.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

I did check the DME and there was some moisture that had leaked through the battery holes. The box appeared to be dry but the wires were wet and when I reached up my hand up underneath the dash behind the glove box there was still some water. Anything to do besides let the DME and wires dry out?
I'm ordering a new coil and DME relay just to rule those out. Thanks for the responses.

Take out the DME. Open it up and dry it out.

Check the wire harness and dry it out.

Fix the holes under the battery.
