time to replace the water pump

Can someone help me find the procedures to replace the water pump. It let go today and there was coolant leaking from the belt cover.

I have the cover off and i think i have to remove all of the belts. the timing belt( one side of teeth ) is really loose, the ballancing belts are good and tight. I need some help with this and would appreciate any help possible.

If anyone in the chicago area mainly great lakes or southern wisconsin could help it would be great. i found the new pump for a reasonable price but have to wait till i get paid to get it. I am good with figuring things out but i need some where to start.

thanks

jeff

Do not even start working on this job without a workshop manual, you should also have the Porsche Parts and Technical Information book.

There are a couple of web sites dedicated to 944 repairs, use Google to find them.

You will need:
Water pump, use the updated type
Timing belt
Balance shaft belt
Alternator belt
Power steering belt
Water pump mounting kit (thermostat, bolts, gasket etc)
Update kit for timing belt guide rail and roller
All of the tensioners.
If the front seals are leaking:
Front seal kit
Oil pump drive (engine number specific) and o-ring
Balance shaft seal sleeves
Crank seal (engine number specific)
.
It's vital that the crank pulley bolt is tightened to the correct torque.
If you are changing the cam seal, always replace the cam seal sleeve and the two o-rings in the cam bearing housing.

Retension the belts after 2000-2500 miles and then every 15,000 after that.

Rotate the crank two revs after every timing belt adjustment and the check the tension.

All of the parts are available from Pelican.

Not to mention that you have a 50/50 chance that one of the studs will break off in the block when you go to remove the pump. This requires extraction, and some times drilling and a helicoil.

Reading the post again, it appears that the timing belt is extremely loose. Whether this is because of where the engine stopped or is when the pump failed the belt stripped (= bent valves) you also need to carefully investigate.

Scott's right about the broken studs, spray them with penetrating oil right now, and keep on doing that so when you actually get round to doing the work the studs/bolts should come out.

Jeff, While the water pump replacement seems daunting it can be accomplished with a strong dose of perseverance.

Yes you do need to have decent manuals or printed instructions to catch all of the little nuances and assure a properly complete job.

I suggest www.clarks-garage.com as a start. Also get a Haynes 944 manual. The actual factory manuals can be found on eBay as PDF's.

If you want to send me a PM I'll give you my e-mail address so you can ask questions directly.
