I've only driven my 83 dry once. Then I only put ten gallons in it as that was all the cash I had. Yes I did make the service station just off of the freeway -- at an idle. Not enought fuel to properly pressurize the rail.

The owners manual for my 87 924S claims a 17 gal tank and that the warning light goes on when it is down to 2.7 gal.
I haven't run it dry but I have put 15+ gal in it after driving 30+ miles after the warning light went on. My guess is that you are seeing normal behavior for a 17 gal tank.
