Sudden Death

O.K. all you guys. Can you tell me why my beautiful and in excellent condition '87 924S would suddenly and without warning completely go dead (the dash oil light, brake light, etc. go on as if you were starting the car but the engine stops running--suddenly). The first time it sat for about an hour before it decided to start back up. The second time it started up the next day and ran fine.

Input would be helpful from all you 924/944 officianados.

Sounds like something electrical to me, what it would be,... damned if I know When you turn the key does the starter trun your engine over or the car does nothing?

Overkill,

Engine cranks--no start. My first thought was vapor lock (it was very hot out), then it could be fuel pump relay or the fuel pump itself. All other electrical gadgets and gizmos work fine.

My shop cannot diagnose the problem because when I had it towed there, when they get to it, it starts and runs fine (minus towing charge and inspection/diagnostic fee).

Go figger.

Electrical, check fuses and dme connections, they seem to go bad and get loose with time. My 44 one day just randomly had it's fuel pump connection go loose and wouldn't start, and it took some good amount of time before it was found. My friends 944 had a loose connection to the dme under the fuse cluster. Lot's of electrical quirks.

There are two very likely suspects...which may be one and the same on your year/model.

The fuel pump relay, and/or the DME relay. Both are about $25, and everyone should have a spare in their glove compartment.

Clark's Garage has an excelent article for trouble shooting these items...

Good Luck.

DME relay first then the speed and reference senders. Seems to be a rash of sender problems croping up here and on Rennlist. The wires are breaking inside the plastic connectors -- age.

Check for spark at the plugs. I had a similar problem with a faulty ignition coil. When the engine heated up, coil got hot and stopped working until it cooled, sometimes 10 minutes later, sometimes 10 hours later.

I 4th SoCal-Reference and speed sensor connections were my problem.
As JP94 says, check for spark, but that could be sensors signal to DME cutting out spark not neccessarily the coil.
Also if you can bridge out fuel pump relay contacts would help eliminate relay as a problem.
