Subs?Amps?What?

I didn't know there was so much interest in "pimping" out 944s. Maybe this is a bit elitest of me but I thought folks bought them because they are excellent sports cars. I don't see why one would spend money on audio equipment when they should be trying to squeeze out more performance. Does anyone else agree with me?

man, don't knock me because i want the accomodations of A/C and something good to listen to... i like to ENJOY my car, you don't ALWAYS have to be racing it...
and furthermore... you're probably too old to understand... he he ;-)

music is fun, and i personally like finely replicated music, i can't stand under achieving audio equipment, i spent some extra money to get the good quality equipment at the casa, why not in the carro?

Well, I'm not sure that 20 is "too old to understand". It's just that I was never impressed with car audio. I have friends with subs and a what not and always thought it to be a waste of money.

well... i don't know... but after listening to some quality speakers (like a 5.1 klipsch system) you learn what quality sound is, and honestly, it's seriously hard to listen to anything less...

How does all that equipment affect your weight, weight distribution, and handeling?

plus its more fun to have a car that can go fast and sound good... sure you can make a civic sound good... but with out a lot of money it wont go nearly as fast as our cars will with the same heavy audio equipment

Well I do not disagree with upgrading the sound system in an almost 20 year old car. But the car came with 5 speakers and a radio/tape deck. What's wrong with a new CD player and some new speakers? As for quality music recordings get a good turntable and some vinyl.

well... personally... i do more "normal driving" and i want some good eminities while i enjoy my transportation... and christ, i don't need any speeding tickets... also, i spend 100% of my time on regular road, not the track

but i do understand where you are coming from, making an option to easily remove my subs is another one my priorities...

I think having a good audio system in the car is a good thing, as long as it's in good taste and well rounded. Not just some, bump, bump you can hear for 3 blocks. Mine does bump some, but i don't have 2000 watts bouncing the car next to me onto the curb and rattling my tranny loose
As a musician, i HAVE to have good rock tunes going while i drive. There's a rhythm to life and driving, pretty sweet when you can get your exhaust tone to match the music.

They ARE excellent sports cars, that why people are spending money on improving the not so excellent parts of the car. There is very little performance that you can get out of a NA 944 besides suspension improvments, and that 944 already has a great suspension.

The original audio system in the 944 is pretty awfull. listining to music with 4 4X6's is not going to reproduce sound all the well. Adding a subwoofer is pretty much necessary to reproduce the lows and mids.

There is definitely a reasonable middle ground. Upgrading the deck, speakers is, in my opionion, a great addition to a great car. And its true that 4x6's need a sub if you expect to hear anything below 150Hz. Subs have gotten a bad name I think, from all the guys rolling on 20s with 2 15s in the trunk booming from 4 blocks away. Subwoofers are good things.

As for weight-gain- A new deck a speakers add nothing (unless you had none to start). A sub and amp can be easily removed for "performance driving days". And a sub doesn't always mean making your ears bleed. It can just mean hearing the parts of the music you didn't know existed. An 8 inch sub in the KLA sub enclosure and a quality amp will amaze anyone who hasn't heard it. And like I said, its like 3-5 minutes to take out if the weight bothers you.

A stereo is a good thing to have in traffic, or situations where I can't listen to the beautiful music of the car itself. I am a bit perplexed by one noise, though. When I hit the gas, a few seconds later it makes this high-pitched pwssssssssssssss sound and then the car goes real fast. ANy ideas?

Now, could SOMEBODY please tell me where to wire up this neon tubing I got? I want it to flash in synch with my light up pedals!

Well... maybe I'm just a big kid at 34 yrs old but I have invested over $1200 into my audio equipment and I am pretty pleased with it. I could "blow" the paint off of the car next to me with my subs bumping if I wanted to, but I choose not to. It's for my listening pleasure not to scare the old blue hair when she pulls up next to me waiting for the light to change. When I bring it to the car shows or the beach during the summer that's a different story, it's for show and fun as well but I do respect fellow driver's on the street as well as my neighbors trying to sleep at 11 pm. People can have subs and amps in their P-cars and be tasteful about it...

kool. i used to live in rochester. i went to school at the Eastman School of Music
i went there for the violin and am currently teaching here in NYC
which leads perfectly into the original topic of this thread...
being a violinist, an excellent sound system is more important to me than squeezing that extra few revs or boost.
you might say, why does a classically trained violinist care for subs and amps but i'm also a dj so loud and clean is imperative
i love performance but sharing that with other loves in my life is better yet!
