subs in place of the rear seats
anyone know any good design to replace the rear seat/fold down part, with a piece of board, and subs, in place of the seats?

No doubts that that'll give you the best sound.
However the bass tube in my trunk is quite good, its self contained and you can keep the car original. Your choice! Mark

go to home depot and get some 1/8 inch masonite, foam tape for the edges and expansion foam for sealing the rattles and good wire from circut city. take the backs off the seats and trace them on the masonite, then get self tapong locking screws for security. there is alot of speaker gonna stick out so buy some ply wood for protection.
or just fold the seats down and get some plywood or osb ( cheaper) to make boxes for the area you want to put the subs in. line the inside of the boxes with wool blanket material so you dont get an echo, and put some lexan on the front with 1 inch holes inthe corners so you dont damage the cones but can show youre stuff. If you build the boxes you can turn them around when the hatch is open just to piss off the neighbors. later jeff |

i don't care about keeping it original... i want it to be MY car... not just like everyone elses, which i don't get WHY people are so into "keeping it original" frankly... thanks for all of the input and for the pics, i'm gonna refer back to those

I don't remember who, but about a year ago someone was making the boxes to go in place of the seats and was selling them. I think they were going for about $100.

I would ignore the advice of the above post, some teenager in my neighborhood was blasting his bass subs when he would come home at night. Which it turns out is a like advertising for stereo theives. He has lost two systems due to his flagrant distrubance of the neighborhood.
So please keep it down in areas where people live, and sleep.

Are you any good with fiberglass work? You could definitely make it "custom" and it would most certainly be original... I fiberglassed my hatch area to accommodate 2 subs, 2 amps, 6 3ways and a lcd screen, I couldn't be happier with the looks and the sound!

Da_mutt......
I am fiberglassing my subs into my rear hatch on my turbo. I have created some drawings that would allow me to pull it out for track events.......... Would you have pics of your install, I would be curious to see what you came up with... ![]()

fiberglassed hatch pics
Sure, here's one! The setup is competely removable as it lifts in and out easily, just unhook or re-hookup the electrical plug ins...

I've got all of the glue/foam out, and i've sanded it, what would ya'll recommend for sound deadening? i'm thinking dynamat xtreme, i've found 20sf for $90. anything that would work better than that stuff? what kind of wood do i use to build the box? what kind of caulk should i see it with? i'm thinking about having it hinged at the top, and lock down at the bottom with some real locks, to make it harder to steal my stuff

If you are going to use wood, MDF board is commonly used for sub box constructions, I would also suggest silicon for sealing your seams. As far as your last question... I'm not sure if I understood what you meant.
You can also use a combo of both wood and fiberglass which would allow you more shaping possibilities. You can use the wood as a frame and template and the fiberglass to mold the areas that will house your subs. If you do this, use wood ring templates as part of your foundation that your subs sit in/screw into. You can buy different types of fiberglass blankets at places like Auto Zone and Walmart, you will also need the Resin and hardener to go with it. Use a plastic bucket to mix in and dip your blankets in because once the excess hardens you can peel it out and reuse your bucket for your next layer. **Wear heavy duty rubber gloves when working with this stuff, the chemical reaction causes it to get very hot until it starts to completely harden. I would also suggest laying down a tarp or plastic in your working area, resin mixed with hardener adheres to many things and is difficult to remove. Creativity is the key, draw out your ideas (which I think you mentioned you already did) and picture it in your car, take measurements at least twice to avoid problems later. As far as cost, the box setup you see in the back of my hatch cost me about $400 to make from start to finish including the primer and paint. Oh yeah, one other thing, ported or sealed enclosures? I would recommend reading the specs on your subs first before you construct the box. Some makes/models suggest ports for optimum sound, others recommend sealed enclosures. I have 2 10inch Alpine S subs, specs say non ported in less than 1 cu ft enclosure. In addition to the what you see in the pic above, there are also 2 fiberglass walls (underneath) seperating my subs from the other components. Sorry this was so lengthy, I was just hoping to help if I could. I'm sure there are a few others on this board that can give you some very good if not better insight as well. Good luck... ~Lisa

Thats really cool, a female into cars... i hope i meet someone like that one day
![]() the question i was asking before was, should i have my subs entirely surrounded by wood, or could i just build "half" a box, and use the seats and the rest as the other half? would that sound good? like put dynamat where the cushions used to go dave

I wouldn't myself but its totally up to you. If your construction allows too much air your subs probably won't be pushing their max performance. Do you have your sub(s) already? What do your specs say?
