Dumb 944 ??s
Hey guys I've just purchased a new 87 944. My questions are what type of gas should I be using (premium or super)? & where the heck is the radio antenna? & my e brake is really hard to release, is there some kind of trick to this? Thanks in advance.

I just bought an 84 944. I don't know how hard is hard for the brake, but you do need to pull it back full force to release the pawl. It should retract easily with the button down. As for the antenna, mine is on the left side. Yours is a later car and could be in the windshield.

The antenna may be intergrated into the windshield, if it has an after market radio fitted and you are getting poor reception then there is probably no powere getting to the antenna amplifier fitted to such cars.
If the parking brake is hard to release it is either worn out or way out of adjustment, I would remove the rear hubs and inspect the park brake shoes and then do the adjustment in the haynes manual. |

You mention an antenna booster on with an aftermarket radio in a 951. Mine is aftermarket and the reception is terrible. Where is the booster? Do you know what wires need to be connected to make it work....I just bought the car and someone has major butchered the wires behind the radio.
Thanks |

do a search for 944 stereo and see if you can find that page it goes into depth about what wires do what, in any case you need to hook the blue wire from the stereo to the amp wire this will provide power to run it now if the windshield has been replaced then you will probably not have a antenna in it you can see if you have an antenna by looking at the passenger side edge and looking for a thin wire it starts at the base of the passenger side and windes up to the center of the windshield..... as far as the brakes go it sounds like you need to inspect the handbrake lever as it should move freely with the button pushed in there is a possibility that a coin or other something has fallen into the lever do that first then remove the rear wheels and take off the rotors to inspect the emergency brake shoes........Stan |

Gonzo... inside the fuel filler cover, you will find a sticker that has the recommended octane rating for your car. I think you will find that the "premium" is best for acheiving this octane range. You can get by with a mid grade. A regular grade gas will really reduce your performance...
clarification gas, here is CA has three grades, reg, mid and premium. Your super may be the same as our premuim and is rated at 92 octane. our mid is often at 89 octane and the regular is at 87. |

The antena amp wire on mine was a black wire that was attached to the antenna coax. I hooked mine to the power antenna lead from my aftermarket stereo and reception improved 100%.

Gip is right on....the wire is black, and is wrapped with your antenna wire in the console...sometime, all you see is a loop of the wire...In this case, cut the wire, and attach the power antenna wire from the stereo unit to the piece of wire that goes into the harness...This definately works...Cus

I agree on the amplifier wire being black and in the antenna lead. When I was working on speakers, I disconnected it from power out of curiosity, and reception did in fact tank big time.
As for gas, the owner's manual on my 84 944 said 87 octane. When you see 91, that might be the European rating: something like RON or MON. Not really sure how that works, but I know my early na ran fine on the cheap stuff. |

Your brake release button could have stripped threads, so you're pushing the button but nothing happens. You can get unscrew it and get that button from Porsche dealer for about $4 I recall.

Your next question will be where is the odometer reset?
Check the vents! Oh Yeah, and then how do I get the sun roof off! Try opening the roof with the key in the ACC position (Not fully turned on). [This message has been edited by SplitKane (edited 05-23-2001).] |
