using 1985 944a parts into a 1986 944
Can I use every part from a crashed 1985 944a to restore a 1986 944 NA???
I´m using engine, clutch, torque tube, axles, rear hatch, sun roof system, suspension parts, brakes rotors and calipers, wheels bearings, seats rails, seats, flywheel, power steering pump, head lights lifter. Wich part cant I use?? |
Which parts you can use depends on the build dates of the cars.
If this is an early '85, then you may not be able to use the front suspension parts, sunroof motor/system, and rear axels. If the donor is an '85.5 with aluminum control arms and aluminum rear swing arms, then you can use the front and rear suspension parts on the '86. Brake rotors and calipers should be a direct swap, as are the rear hatch, seats, seat rails, flywheel (as long as the '86 is not a turbo), torque tube, clutch, engine, head light lifter, and power steering pump. |
if it is an early 85, the tranny won't work, it has a different speed sensor set up, but you may be able to retrofit the sender I don't know. You can use a late tranny in an early car. Other than that most stuff will work. The suspension is different in an early car, but you should be able to use it if you swap the entire suspension. The control arms are different, but I think they will work.

then the engine, torque tube and clutch works even if it´s an early 85......how do I know if it is?? by the VIN number???? the suspension and A-arm I´m not going to use them, the tranny too......I only need engine, torque tube, clutch and inteior parts......

Not VIN's; experiance.
Some of the periferal controls on the early engine will not work with a later model DME (electronic brain). These are the air flow sensor and the idle possitioner or stabilizer valve. The post 85.1 air flow sensor has a different resistence curve than the early ones. Although I've heard of early AFS's being used on later cars. The idle possitioner on the early models uses a heated bi-metalic spring to close it's valve while the later modes use a spring centered needle valve that the DME controls directly. The early block has a small single terminal temp sender for the gauge. The later model temp gauge sender can be fitted to the early engine by drilling through to the water jacket and tapping to match the treads on the later two circuit temp gauge sender. Don't know what interior parts you think you can use. Almost everything is different. Door panels, dash, seats, center console, AC, fresh air system, steering column and switches and more. |
Most times, the late 85 944 came with the same dash board as your 86. Thats the easy way to tell

thanks for the tip.........
