Post 951 turbo cooling pump?

Hi all,

My 951 turbo cooling pump worked fine before I had the timing belt and water pump replaced at the local dealer. Now it runs and runs... It used to stay on for about 30-60 seconds, I just pulled the fuse after an hour run! I immediately replaced the fuse and it stayed off. Any ideas?

Thanks

Just a guess, but maybe the thermostat? Not sure how it's hooked in or where it is, but my understanding is there's a coolant temp sensor that runs the turbo pump. When you shut down if coolant is cold, it will always run for at least 30sec. After you hit the critical temp, it will keep running until it gets below that temp.

When hot, I've heard mine running for up to 15 minutes.

Thanks for the reply. I let it run last night for for 2hrs before I ....get this, leaned on the reservoir and it shut off. I'm thinking it is running but not cooling

I will keep looking.

Thermostat is on the turbocharger. You should be able to see the water getting pumped into the reservoir if the reservoir is clear.

Hi Kevin , find the relay for the turbo cooant pump and remove it open it up and clean the contacts and replace it also pull all the other relays one at a time and see if there is any corrosion on any pins any rusty coloring is suspect replace all of the fuses in fuse box and be alert to the sockets that they slid into as some might have been spread out also use some dielectric grease on the thie pins in the fuse box this should cure your problem the pump is desgined to run for 30 seconds after shut down to test the system find the temp sensor on the coolant tube from the turbo it is a single wire turn on the key and remove the wire ground it and the pump should run remove the wire and the pump will stop after 30 seconds if this doesnt happen then the relay is bad for the coolant pump......Stan

Thanks for the replies.

Currently I need to replace a hose on the engine water pump so the turbo pump checkout is on hold. I will post findings here when I figure out whats going on.

Thanks again.

Hi Kev, you can still check the pump with or without coolant in it turn on the key till all the lites come on then turn it off you should be able to hear the pump running, if not then turn on the key and ground the single wire to the sender on the turbo cooling duck mounted on the side of the turbo, the pump should run if not then you might need a new pump. vertex has them for 85.00 bux.....or it might be a relay..
BTW dont keep running the pump it is supposed to be lubricated from the coolant
a quick test run should not hurt it tho..... also use Phosphate free coolant when you replace the hose do new coolant if you dont have it in already the coolant will say on the bottle if it is Phos free.............Stan

Update:

I finally got time to fool with the car today. I removed and cleaned the contacts and reinstalled the relay and checked it with a DVM. I tried to use the method that Stan described but to my shock the battery was dead....really dead. This made the picture a lot more clear since the cooling pump had been disconnect a week or two ago! I applied my charger and the cooling motor started right up and ran and ran. I pulled the lead off the temp. sensor and about 20 seconds later it stopped. I'm pretty sure that I have a bad sensor. Where is a good place to get one?

Thanks for all your help!

What about a bad relay? I cleaned mine recently because it was not running when the engine was shut off. I removed the closure and squeezed the contacts of the relay. It would stop and start as I pushed the contacts together. Don't know whether it was a dirty prong or the contacts themselves. I cleaned everything and now it works as it should.
