oil pressure at startup

I've searched the archives and found posts and answers for total loss of oil prime after rebuild.

I seem to have a similar problem - maybe a partial loss of prime? At startup, there is no oil pressure for about 10 - 20 seconds with a knocking sound. The oil pressure then suddenly comes up to a regular level.

Is this a partial loss of prime? and is the fix the same?

Thanks in advance.

sorry - I should add that it is a 85.5 944 NA

Sounds like the OPRV (oil pressure release valve). there are 2 types depending on year. NOTE: Put vehicle specs in profile. How's that socal?

It is easily removed from the lower front of the oil cooler remove the access cover and remove valve assy. clean and inspect. If you see any rust you will need to re-seal the oil cooler. Should do it anyway. The new style '85.5 and above you will need the alignment tool.

Of all things my no oil problem was the oil filter. I replaced it and have proper oil pressure now.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?
