beating it up

i have a 1985.5 944 NA with about 92k miles on it and i'm in the process of making it my cream machine. however, i was wondering if anyone had any ideas as far as the durability of a 944. i am young and stupid so i like to do and occasional burn out on the strip and i'd like to race my sister on the open (very open) road...she has a sooped up camaro z28. most of the parts are original minus the usual like belts, plugs, etc. can my p-car take it or should i hold off until i rebuild everything?

Going fast in your car will not hurt it, it is made for that.

What WILL kill it is doing burnouts, regardless of if its rebuilt or not. The dragstrip is a bad place for your car, borrow your sis's Z28 (It was made for it). Your transmission will break. And it will cost you more to fix it than it would to buy a beat-up Iroc and trash it in the first place.

944 + burnouts = $$$$$$$$$

If you want to have the kind of fun your 944 was made for, go to a Driver's Ed event. If you haven't heard of it, it is NOT like high school drivers ed. You are on a race track and you get to drive VERY fast and see your car come alive. You could also go to an autocross.

You can smoke your sister's car, easily, with no damage to your transmission. Just find a road with corners

grrrrr....damnit...would a different tranny allow this or should i just find a different car for burnouts on the strip...like a nissan skyline R34 :-D

Yep, after 3 drop clutch burnouts, the $2000 944 tranny will be nothing but a memory. Stronger transaxles will have about the same lifespan.

Probably time to sell your 944 and get something else. These cars are not made for American style drag racing.

nah, i haven't even had time to open it up yet...haven't really driven it yet...and on top of all that it's my dad's namesake...this baby is goin to my son when the time comes

1) why would you want to do burnouts in a PORSCHE 944?!? It is a 150hp car. all of the fun of the car is in the handing; is it fast? Sure, it's fast... once you get it into 3rd gear. If you are bringing a 944 to the drag strip, prepare to get your butt handed to you by a Honda Civic. Burnouts are for muscle cars... this thing was built FOR THE TRACK. Have you ever seen a real race car do a burnout? Didn't think so.

2) Your tone ("cream in my pants") seems to point that you are not quite ready for this car... believe me, I have been around this site for quite awhile - you will get mocked and flamed for this kind of attitude. This is not a Ricer board. hell, you haven't even really driven the car yet and you're already talking about racing your sister's Camaro and doing burnouts. This is more akin to a ricer board than to a Porsche board.

The independent rear suspension should give you a clue as to the burn-out capabilities of the P-car. DON'T!!!

Otherwise, wouldn't all the NHRA guys be running IRS?

Put the car in storage till you are about 40 years old. Then just maybe you will be mature enough to figure out what these types of cars are for.

Also might have a car left over for any kids you may have.

Indy cars and nascars all do burnouts leaving the pits as well as a lot tof the cars at 24 hr LeMans

Not defending the burnout mind you I'm too afraid in my 140 hp pony its expensive to fix driving it properly Thats why I have a s-10 for burnning through second

jeez louise...i didn't know so many people were adamantly against burn-outs...when i can i'll find a track and a teacher to show me the dark side of the P-car, until then, i'll use it for what its really meant on the street...to pick up import models with more than half a brain.. :-P

i don't know about not beating cars off the line though...it hands a can of whoop-ass to my jetta...and my jetta hands cans to most non-v8 normal cars on the road...oh well, guess i won't be eating any civics or beamers yet... :'-(

yeah, i'm young, and no, i haven't been able to open it up on an open track, hell, i'm still tryin to find out where one is around here that isn't under construction...but that's apart of youth, growing and all that jazz. until i reach that elitest aspect of "refined" driving i will be fascinated with raw power while maintaining my appreciation for the finer automobiles as well. (and i'd like to see anyone on this form atleast not salivate at the sight of the HKS Skyline that has the world record 1/4 mile...best combination of power and control) :-P

Eaze..... you sound just like my nephew........ he was so hooked on 1/4 mile runs........... and his buddies camaro that ran high 12's in the 1/4....

So I took him on an autocross run.............. I had to get someone to hold the camera... hehehe

I had him screaming like a baby........ he was hooked. He doesnt look at his buddies camaro the same way any more..........considering I was considerably faster than the other F-bodies in the autocross.

Thats where these cars shine.

If you want to go fast in a straight line their are many other options.... but save the 944 for the day you want to drift around a corner on a track....

I wasn't trying to put you down, but I was just warning you as to what you can expect if you start posting about drag racing and burnouts on a Porsche forum.

I meant INTENTIONALLY.

In all seriousness, the burnout/drag race mentality does not generally coincide with Porsche cars at all. It's not that Porsche owners think they're above it (ok, maybe they do), it's just that our cars are good at so many things, it doesn't make too much sense to break it by utilising only one of its many attributes. This is something you're going to have to get used to.

Take this for example: a tuned Chevy Chevelle SS would absolutely embarrass a 944 on a straight road... this was proven to me one day when I opened her up on a deserted road one day on the way home from work when there was a VERY LOUD Chevelle behind me. Pretty nice car, that one... I just couldn't seem to leave him behind; as a matter of fact, he kept drifting toward the middle of the road as if he were going to pass me...

... that is only until the road started getting windy. Then HE couldn't even PRETEND to keep up. I heard his tires squealing as he took corner after corner too fast and had to back off quickly. This was all at a pace where the 944 felt comfortable and confident. After awhile, I didn't hear his car any more. He had given up. At the next light, he pulled up next to me and rolled down the window... he couldn't believe how easily I walked away from him in the twisties, mumbled something about needing to upgrade his suspension. He asked what I'd done to my suspension. You wouldn't believe his face when I told him the suspension is right from the factory (granted, with the factory sport option). Turns out his car had well over 300hp (as he claimed) and is a favorite at the local makeshift (ie not official) dragstrip. His parting words were, "I love this thing, but I think I might need to get me one of those (pointing to the 944)"

Will you leave EazeOn alone???? If he drives a 944 as it should be, I'll loose my source of good, but broken, (and don't have the money to fix it) $500 (or less) 944s......
