alternator belt tension
I replaced the alternator belt on my 951. It goes around the engine pulley and the AC. Do I need a soecific tool to get the right tension. It squeals when I startup.

How did you tension it? From experience elsewhere, there should be about 1/2" deflection on the long axis (between the AC and the crank.) There is a special tool made to get the absolute correct tension every time, but it's not really needed. Just when you check it, don't use the Schwarzenegger finger method.

No you don't really need a tool to make it work just tighten it until it stops squeking it is not as critical as the timming belt.
If you perfer you can use a straight edge a ruler, and a spring scale like what is used to wieght fish. I'm not sure what the tension specs are. You don't want to over tighten the belt because it causes bearing wear in every thing the belt is going around. Also they make tools that will check the tension of V belts that cost around $20. If auto parts stores don't carry them you can check bearing supply houses or industrial supply stores. Or mail order www.mcmaster.com www.mscdirect.com |
