automatic to manual conversion??? hmmmmmm
I'm sick and tired of my automatic transmission. Ever since I got the WRX Demo, (5 speed, turbo, mods to 260 hp :D ) I've craved a 5 speed for my 944. I have an 86 automatic, and an 83 5 speed (Smacked in the nose, but runs and shifts fine). Would it make sense to swap, or should I just put both on e-bay, and buy a turbo????? anyone ever done the swap?
|
How badly "smacked" is the 83?
As to converting: It's possible. If you have time and not much money to bail on both cars and buy a turbo. |

the irony! but isn't that what it always boils down to no matter what the problem is? ;) |
My wipers are smearing? Should I rebuild them, pay $$ to replace them, or sell my car and buy a 930?

A guy who used to post here named daly944 did the auto-to-manual conversion on his car. Maybe search the archives for his old posts. If you can get a 951 for the price of both cars, go for it. Make sure it is a good condition 951 though, a cheap one will likely end up costing you quite a bit more in the long run.

Hey!Stop saying a cheap 951 will cost more!
I had only spent about 2000$ on 3000 miles in half a year and only expect about 2000$ more! :D And i will have the full potential when i fix everything! Please look at the positive side! You are demoralizing me! :p Nice bird-of-prey mytoy944...Qaplá! with your conversion |

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for your 951? :) |

Best answer yet! |
I paid about 4500 Nabeel,so the total sum of about 8000-9000 it´s not very expensive,i think, with 77k miles and all things fixed(i hope) and with full potential.
If next tuesday when i do compression check piston rings are worn, maybe i´m changing my mind...but for now i think it´s not exaggerated. Yeah,i might have bought a n/a in better shape, but after trying the 951....i prefer staying single and working as a bee :) |
the 'early' 83 transaxle won't work...electronic speedo in the 'lates' (after the 85.1)
yeah...how badly is the 83 damaged? |

Geeez I forgot that you guys are such a TOUGH crowd! No Sympathy here! OK the 83 944 was sold yesterday, and I'm putting the 86 on the block today. (anyone want an 86 in good condition with 96000 highway miles, good leather, new almost everything, and a .... gulp!.... automatic?) If I can get my price, then there might just be a late model 944 N/A with MTM or dare I hope for this, a turbo.
By the way, the 83 had run over a stop sign, had no hood, and assorted other pieces, but damn! it ran like a champ! It would have required more then I wanted to spent to bring back to life. |
Thanks for injecting me moral Nabeel, but one thing i´m learning:a 951 ALWAYS need work...no matter how is she. ;)
Mytoy,mi point of view is that you buy a turbo or other stock car you may want...even if your conversion works fine, you´ll not assure long life to it,or be covered by factory/thousand users when things get wrong...I bet that major conversions are much expensive at medium/long terms than buying a turbo or something like that. And for God mercy, sell that hyundai!! |
Yeah You've got an excellent point there. To own one of these cars it to expect it to always be a "work in progress". I guess it's better to start with a solid base, the to try an d make it something it's not.
By the way my wife drives the Hyundai, and not very well at that. |
