Porsche Cayenne S
Off topic, so I'll first say, 944
![]() Wow, you guys ever get a chance to get up close and personal with one of those new Cayennes, give it a good look over. Them things are sweet. I did feel like some aspects of the car were a little 'cheap', there just seemed to be too much plastic in the center console area, it just didn't feel as 'finished' as it could of been. But overall, that is definately a SUV I'd put on my list, if I were ever rich that is. And jeez, those huge brake calipers, drool. The guy actually offered me a test drive, but I declined..... Just the whole thought that I couldn't even afford the down payment on one, made me feel 'unworthy'. Now to figure out how to get one of those transponder key systems to work in the 944, I really liked the idea of never having to pull the key out of my pocket.

umm the S isn't THAT expensive... it's the Turbo that can cost upwards of $100K. the critics have spoken, and it seems that the Cayenne Turbo is worth the money, the S ISN'T.

A Cayenne Turbo was run in the One Lap of America competition by Tony Swan, the executive editor of Car and Driver and a former racer himself. He basically said that the thing was a pig on the track, given its nearly 6000 pound weight. Even those big brakes could not properly stop the vehicle on the track, and the thing was sliding everywhere. I remember them saying that in conclusion, they wished the Cayenne was more Porsche and less SUV.
If I were rich enough to ever be looking at that type of vehicle, I would get a BMW X5 4.6is and save about $40K to buy a really really nice 930, or maybe a 993.

When i was at the factory in the early year,a guy from the worshop told me the turbo is faster than the 959...don´t know if it was true, but they were really impressed. He also told me that, with a few days with that models on the street,a few guys (suppossed porsche snobs) had wrecked some cayennes....poor rich guys!
![]() Cayenne´s engine is basically 928 one,so...even very far,but we have half cayenne engine (those of us que have the 2.5 one).Well, more or less, i know. A 928 with the cayenne turbo engine...that it would had been a real beast....just imagine the potential ....cool!!

"the turbo is faster than the 959"
Yeah, maybe the 996 turbo. Did they mean faster in a straight line? (it isn't) Or faster around a track? (I doubt it)

I think the Cayenne´s pig ugly - reminds me of a Reliant Scimitar from the 70's.
If I needed an SUV there are plenty of cheaper alternatives that would do the job as well if not better. Mind you, I'm extremely biased; the 944 is the only Porker I truly liked sporty yet practical. The 911 always reminded me of Noddy's car. The Boxster never really filled the 944's shoes - it looks like an over-priced Mazda. I hate the funny arse-end of the 928 and loathe the motorcyle-like headlamps. Heh! Who haven't I insulted yet? 924's ... they're .... ![]()

Dark Skies, you're going to have to excuse us for not understanding every word of your charming British vernacular...
now what exactly is a "noddy"? ![]()

Noddy is a character from a series of children's books written by Enid Blyton

No way a Turbo Cayenne is faster than a 959. Hell, I don't even think it will be faster around a racetrack than a 951. There's no getting around it, 6000lbs is a whole lot to carry on a track. The 959, awesome as it was and still is, can be beaten by a 996TT or even a 993 TT around a track and in pretty much every measurable performance category (except top speed- the 959 is probably faster than a 993TT).

I don't really like the idea of Porsche stooping to the point of making a truck but the sad truth is it will probably save the company from the competitive decline (in the showroom that is) of the 911 and Boxster series. Without the Cayenne sales, the Porsche marketing team would be under some heavy pressure ...
Regards, DL

I have no beef with the Cayenne. You KNOW eventually somebody will get their hands on an engine from a wrecked Cayenne and it will go in a 944. Then it all starts to make sense.
Porsche's next project should be just that. A new generation 944 with the Cayenne motor in it. And a sequential transmission. And an oil filter that is right side up. Sweeeeeet. |

I don´t even thionk a 959 is slower....but they told me that.Of course it´s not on track,i suppose they mean at the highway...maybe the cayenne is able to speed a little faster but slow acceleration because of the longest gears, don´t know this point but i suppose is that.
