How different are the 16v and 8v motors?

I was looking for the differences between the 8 and 16V motors in the 944, I searched the board and all I could come up with was "there a few differences" but thats it; no mention of what they are. Did adding 2 more valves per cylinder really massage 20 more HP out of this engine? I don't think so, because of what I've read on here about how hard it is to really upgrade these motors. So, what exactly DID they change?

Also, would an S motor just bolt right in to an 8V engine bay? Or could one just snag a 16V head and slap it on the 8V motor?

Come on SoCal, Britwrench and AF..I know you got the skinny on this:-P

Higher compression. Better breathing. One heck of a mess if the timing belt or cam chain breaks.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

Here is the best way I have ever heard it put. And sorry don’t remember where it came from!

“An in internal combustion engine is nothing more then a Hugh air pump, the more air you move though it, the more HP you get.” More values= more air…

Granted there is a little more to it, but the idea is correct!

Talk about fast responce time

By better breathing, were they any different parts, or just modifications to the 8V parts? Ported/polished manifold, etc?

Is the risk of the 16V motor a better bet than trying to squeeze 20 more HP out of the 8V? I figured some higher compression pistons, early forged rods, some head/intake work, ECU and headers/exhaust might add a few ponies. Any ideas on numbers?

Domed pistons, completly different head, intake and exhaust design.

Wasn't there an increase in cc's or is that the S2?

Thanks for the info You rock.

AFAIK, the increase in CCs came with the S2 with a displacment of 3.0L. The S2 is basically a bored and stroked S.

S1 has pre-tensioned belts; S2 uses spring tensioner

I bet wiring harness swap is high on difficulty scale for 8v to 16v

My guess for easiest upgrade swap is '89 2.7l 8v motor; 10-15 hp maybe?

anybody ever done a 2.5 to 2.7 swap?
