WHOA! i tried the site again and it did work. unfortunately the prices are so high that i had to do a double-take to make sure they weren't stating the prices in Yen, or Pesos, or just liked to move the decimal place over to the right.

in any case, they don't have the springs for the 924

obin,

If you have one out, and spec book for installed height, check Summit Racing for a close matchup on Crane Springs.

Part No CRN-99848-16 $ 66.95 for 16 springs.

Without digging up an old spring & the spec book, this one seems close, 105lb at 1.700, 296 at 1.200, binds at 1.153, 1.255OD .870 ID.

edit: If I remember right, 924 is dual spring while above no is a single.

Thumbs up

thanks so much drew1!!!!

THOSE are prices i like . problem is now that i can't get the F**KING springs OUT!!!! the ones in there are STUBBORN. they simply don't want to budge... i wonder if i already have high rpm ones in there and was never told by the Previous Owner. is there any way to get them tested? i can't start the port and polish until they come out though. i got a valve spring compressor from sears but it won't work... or am i doing something wrong?

thanks again!

One thing you might to loosen the keepers is to set the head up on wood blocks where the valves won't hit a hard surface surface, spray the valve stem/retainer/keeper assy with penetrating oil, put a socket on the end of an extension on the retainer and knock the devil out of it.

The stock springs are pretty tight, new ones from Porsche are about $6 or $9, if I remember right. If you could get something down in there to cut the old ones, it would be good, but is it possible?

The big 9 or 10 inch C clamp works better than the crafstman Valve spring compressor tool, in my opion.

We used the c clamp route with a socket tack welded to it. The socket was a junker that was cut out quite a bit to gain access to the keepers. Cheap and effective.

Angry

ok,

these 924 valves are pissing me off EXTREMELY. i have a feeling that if i crank down any harder on them... i'll end up either bending the valve or busting the cylinder head.

i am using a 8" c-clamp and i put a u-shaped piece of metal on the end of it. i clamped down as HARD as i could... and the piece of metal bent

i don't want to break anything, but i want to know HOW hard do you have to crank down on these springs before you can get them to deflect enough to get at the little spring keeper?

anyone want to let me "rent" a valve spring compressor (even a home made one). i have looked EVERYWHERE in town and NOBODY has one for Porsche 924 (or for Audi or VW SOHC either).

thanks!

obin,

wanted to do some checking before I told you to try heat on the retainer to help break taper loose from the keepers. reason is it might take temper out of springs, keepers, valve stem tip, & retainer.

took one of the 924t springs(same part # as 924na) that i removed & took diminsions of inner & outer springs. using machinist's handbook calculated load at room temp at1.700 (41 lb) & 1.200 (136 lb). this is less than half of of crane springs posted above. retainers can be bought to fit these springs. manley & others can fab big stainless valves that locks can be bought to work with retainers.

big concern is wear on cam & lifters (about $50 each) with heavy springs.

saw that you live in Ithaca, NY. going up that interstate that comes through PA, then Binghamton , you turn off to the west to get to Ithaca. Seems like I saw something about a race track on that road where they run 4 cyl. the ford 2300 that"s popular use rocker arms but some of the round trackers may be able to provide info on parts sources & machine shops.

Obin,

Have you gone to AutoZone? They rent spring compressors for $20 and give you your money back when you return the tool. It is a pretty nice system, but don't know if they have the right tool for a 924. Worth a shot!

Glad you got the exhaust out. Saw in earlier post about you wanting even homemade compressor. Advise if you want to borrow part that I use with compressor & C clamp.
