Post 1983 944 - Lighter And Faster?

Have some questions about the following link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1154643295

If the link doesn't work, look up eBay item number 1154643295.

1. Who in their right mind would buy a 1983 944 with 139,000 miles for $13,000?

2. Are the 83's lighter and faster than the later 2.5 liters?

3. Did the "racers" prefer the manual rack and pinion steering? If so, then why not incorporate that into the later years?

4. Where is the "Carrera style body work"?

it's Canadian dollars. So around 6,500 in American. Still a rip-off if you ask me. It looks really clean and all, but not worth near that much with that many miles. What is a 944 Arizona?

My bad. I saw $13,000 and jumped to conclusions. I think he means that the 944 is from Arizona.

I have an 83 944. It does not have power steering or a power sunroof or power locks, which does indeed make it the lightest of the 944s (I think they introduced power steering on the 1984 cars). Someone also told me that the 1983s have the least restrictive cats of all the NAs. From what I've seen from road tests in magazines, the 1983 car is the fastest of the 944NAs (not counting the S and S2). ROAD AND TRACK tested a 1983 US SPEC 944 back in late 1982 that did 0-60 in 7.6 seconds (manufacturer's claim was 8.2 I think). The later NA944s were more in the 8.4 second range 0-60.

If you can find a low-mileage 83 car that is in good shape, pick it up! I absolutely love mine! $6500 is a bit pricey, though... especially for a car with that mileage that high.

Oh, and by Carrera-style bodywork, he probably means the air scoop in the hood that is derived from the 924CarreraGT. As far as I can tell, his air scoop is non-functional.

Wink

I would pay $13K for it. After all, big V8s have trouble keeping up with this smooth car.

Hey it sounds like CJ stole my car! I also have a an '83 944 with no power steering, no power sunroof or power locks...at least there is a plus to some of that. I got mine in good shape for $4500 with 80k on it.

0-60 in 7.6s! I seriously doubt that my -83 euro (163 hp) will do that. But who knows, maybe I will get the horses back after I finished replacing the fuel pressure regulator, aux. air valve and ultra sonic cleaned (is this the right word in English?) the injectors.

Give me a little while and I'll pull out that old ROAD AND TRACK and post the test data.

Ok zeloy or cj...which one of you stole my car? I've got a 83 too. When I got mine the guy I bought it from said the same thing, about how the 83's are a little faster in the 0-60 times than the later na's, but I would still like to see proof. So cj when you get the r&t issue let us know...........
