Hey all... My friend was gawking at my car one day and he asked me what year it was and relplied that it was an EARLY 85...then he asked why did the make two 85's....then I acted dumbfounded and tried to change the subject....so I'm now asking you all...why did they make two and what are their differences..?
thx. Brandon85-944 |

Updated interior is the main difference, but I think they also reworked the computer and it is possible to put in an aftermarket chip in the late 85. This might have also been when they switched to using the Phone Dial wheels as standard.

WHY they did it is because they were planning a model change, and it didn't match up with a model year change-over. Therefore, some of the '85 model year got the old style, and some of the '85 model year got the new style.
this mid-model year changeover is more common than you think. Other car manufacturers do it too, just nobody advertises it. Mike Just as a side note - I've heard quite a few rumors about people with cars very close to the change-over VIN, where some early cars had a few late parts, and some late cars had a few early parts. Mostly minor parts though. They simply used up the early parts they had left over, and when they were short, they used some late parts on early cars. |

The only other difference other than the interior/dash is the newer models use aluminum suspension components. Although this change doesn't correspond exactly to the model year (some older models had this treatment) it is generally thought of as a midyear upgrade...

Shaun... now that I think about it, you may be both right and a bit wrong.. my 86 has the script on the door handles but our 85.5 did not. I guess that the door handles were one of those parts that when used up, moved over to the updated part. FYI, my 86 has a late 85 build date...
