Tranny oil.....clarifications

Ok.....leg work done, now I want to do it.....

I want to do it this weekend, so I will go buy the Mobil 1 tranny fluid. Now, I've never bought tranny fluid for a manual car. I mean, I use ATF in my dirtbike gearboxes and like the results, but in a manual tranny I need to know exactly which tranny fluid I amlooking for at the local parts store (Auto Zone, O'reilly's, Advanced Auto parts, etc...)?

My mechanic has a pump that I can use, but I want to get the correct oil, of course, and will go with Mobil 1 AND the correct amount.

The quart bottles of trans lube can be use to fill the trans. The top plug opening large enough for the neck of the bottles. A little twisting of the rectangular bottle as you pour is necessary.

So, I pour in about 3 qts until it begins to overflow or what?

What IS full capacity? I can call the local dealer, but they've messed me up more than I care to mention.

And, lastly, what is the Mobil 1 tranny fluid called? "Manual tranny fluid 80/85w"???

Paragon parts sell it.

Don't use a higher grade than 75W90 or your shifts will suffer (thick oil = doesn't run off synchro cones as easily)

I use Swepco it took a little over 3 quarts. You just fill it untill it starts to come out of the upper hole. If you cant fit the bottle in there you any autoparts store sells a cheap plastic pump that screws on to the top of the quart bottles. They are only a couple of bucks. I had to use one on the Intrepid.

beaware, DO NOT FILL SO IT COMES OUT.

UK is 2 (ish) ltrs, check in your manual what the US equivalent is.

The best way I found is as below

1> remove the filler plug first
2> remove the drian plug SECOND
3> drian the oil, if necessary, leave for a while
4> refit the drain plug (and correctly torque)
5> now for the UK car it was 2 bottles exactly, I poured the oil into one of thoes one man brake bleeder bottles, and when connected up the oil came outta the hose easily.
6> if it is 2 litres eg. use just that, the level MUST be about 6mm (?) from the bottom of the filler hole, UNLIKE other cars dont just pour it in till it overflows, overfilling can cause an excess of preassure, and loss of oil trhough seals, usually, at the other end of the transaxel, where the brake disks are (rotors), too much preasuure is bad for the box, overfilling causes drag and in theory higher MPG

check your drivers manual or ask a dealer, I think even the Haynes says it (soory not at home so I cant scan it)

specifically says 6mm (or there abouts) BELOW the filler hole

I just picked up 3 qts of Mobil 1 75W90 at auto zone for $7/qt. I also asked them to look up capacity and it says 2 and 3/4 Qts.

My next question.....I want to do this real soon, so could I do this in my driveway? Will I have problems filling it up w/out a pump? But if auto zone has one for a few bucks, then I can pick one up.


I understand it takes a 17MM hex, so I will secure that for sure.

What is the status on filling ti it overfills OR putting in 2 and 3/4 qts? See why I ask so many 'stupid' questions? I'll plead ignorant anyday if it saves me money in costly repairs because of pride!! See.....as you get older...who cares???

If that is the capacity for a US spec car then cool.
driveway no problem.
possibile, its at an awkward angle, the best is with a brake bleered kit as I said.

DONT OVERFILL, trust me, DO NOT OVERFILL
and again for the people at the back DONT OVERFILL.

Adrian, I just printed the paragon page you referred to and it makes me feel ALOT better. It does not look that difficult, either.

My next question was going to be: "Where are these two hex filler/drain bolts?", but you took care of that.

2.75 qts is what Auto Zone's computer says.......I am going to call the dealer and ask them just to be safe, because paragon lists it

OK I dont know much but I can read and the FWSM says at least 6-8 mm below the fill plug 2liters Appox. So happy filling!!!

I recall someone posting that you should always be sure to take out the FILL plug first, just to be sure you can get it out okay, before you take out the drain plug. That way, if you strip the fill plug you can still drive the car if you need to.

hmm, about 2 weeks ago, i decided to check the fluid level, and i had a real time, getting the plugs loose! i would check the filler plug first, then the drain, for the reasons listed above.
i used a 17mm hex allen wrench, and ended up applying an 18" pipe to the dang thing too, AND, i also had a wrench at 180, to the pipe, pulling on the pipe, and pushing with the wrench. this helps the 17mm wrench, from coming out, as you "give it some". trust me, your knuckles will thank you!
